Femininity In Mexican Soccer

Futbol, otherwise known as soccer in the United States, is a well known athletic game across the country of Mexico. The current premier league became established in 1943. However, the first international match was in 1923, and since then the only country to have ever hosted two World Cups, the biggest soccer tournament in existence. Therefore, there are generations of soccer fanatics passed on in the families of Mexico. With that being said, this sport is taken very serious in some aspects of the Mexican culture. An example of the seriousness within the so called, “beautiful game”, is the fact that many youth academies begin training children for their future career as young as five years old; around the same time preschool is expected to begin. I believe the seriousness behind this world wide game is much deeper than most believe it is, and the answers could be found in Hofstede’s cultural dimensions of time, collectivism versus individualism, indulgence, and masculinity versus femininity.

These dimensions are most important because they can be seen more often and have been seen for a longer period of time within the culture of Mexico and the culture of futbol. Nevertheless, without the other two dimensions, these three important aspects of Mexican culture would not exist due to the fact that all culture is interrelated. All in all, knowing these giant cultural dimensions for the beautiful game behind the Mexican perspective is important in order to have a better understanding of the seriousness portrayed for the sport, and to obtain an expertise of the Mexican people as
