Edward Snowden, the former subcontractor of the National Security Agency is a dishonorable traitor who threatened the welfare of The United States’ national security system. Through the works of prominent philosophers including, Ronald Dworkin, Thomas Hobbes, and Henry David Thoreau it provides an understanding of the importance of establishing a proper punishment while enforcing the prior precedent. These works are able to be applied to Edward Snowden’s case due to his avoidance of accepting the punishment for leaking classified information to the media. The information he revealed exposed the American government of participating in invasive surveillance practices against their own citizens. Snowden was charged under the Espionage Act, however,…

In this paper, I argue against government surveillance advocates. In recent years, many whistle blowers have come out and making awareness of the government activities. The surveillance is deposing the citizens privacy and rise the concern to what the government intent is. Additionally, the activities that take place under the government surveillance program strike citizens over their rights-to-privacy. Not-only-but-also, it violates the constitutional right of unreasonable search and seizure warrantlessly.…
Glenn Greenwald wrote an article, titled, “The Sunday Times' Snowden Story is Journalism at its Worst — and Filled with Falsehoods”, and he talked about how Western journalists, specifically U.S. and U.K. journalists, fabricated evidence to create articles so that they could publish stories to prove that Snowden was a villain. Although reputable sites publish them, they should be taken with taken with a grain of salt since create stories out of nothing In his article, he convinces the reader well because he provides multiple examples of articles where the news agency provides false proof to create a fake story. He also includes evidence where his significant other, David Miranda, was wrongly accused of having files since he was stopped in the airport and since then, Sunday Times removed the article which shows that Western journalists use false information to get the story they want. Though, with all his evidence on how the articles, he didn’t provide any evidence as to any Western Journalist doing the right thing and it makes seem like all of the new agencies cannot be trusted.…
In the passage “Yes, the CIA torture report should have been released” written by Tom Keane for The Boston Globe it states “ Indeed, that’s the reason we have laws at both the federal and state levels that require government meetings be open and records made public. If we have a right to know why a restaurant was granted a liquor license, shouldn’t we also have a right to know how the CIA conducts its activities.” This piece of text is a perfect example as to why it should have been released. If we have the right to know what our army does, we get to decide whose president, and we live in a democratic country why can’t we know what our C.I.A. is doing? It’s an outrage that they think they can betray the people who fund and govern them.…
Edward snowden is a computer professional that is famously known for leaking information on the U.S. National Security Agency in 2013. Snowden said in an interview that “ The NSA has built an infrastructure that allows it to intercept almost everything that is uses telecommunications.”(www.cfr.org). This infrastructure collects data all around the United States. This is private information that is being collected without our consent or a warrant being present. The Obama Administration defended the surveillance program saying “ it 's legal, limited and effective with preventing terrorist acts” (www.cfr.org).…
The United States is spying on citizens suspected of terrorism. This is done mainly with bulk data collection and filtering by the NSA. Spying and warrants are attended to legally through Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, and specially made courts. The courts provide judicial review. The goal of the spying is to find citizens influenced by foreign radicals into a potentially violent level of fringe ideology before they act.…
From the moment we are born, essentially, we are taught that rules are meant to be followed. We also learn, from that same young age, that when rules are not followed there are consequences. This is true for the five-year-old who steals from the cookie jar, just as it is true for the adult who breaks the law. However, we as adults have something that many five-year-olds have not fully developed: a conscience. Many say that rules are put in place to protect us, and because of this they should be followed, and in an ideal world this is true.…
Americans have been questioning whether government surveillance has passed the limits of the right of privacy. The controversy is set whether the violation of the right of privacy is in exchange for security. In other words, is the government really providing security or control the citizens? Is it really to benefit the people or the government? With that questions, more questions are made like: Is the government correct on doing what is being done?…
“There can be no faith in government if our highest offices are excused from scrutiny – they should be setting the example of transparency” (Snowden, qtd in Pope). Edward Snowden made this statement following his leak of thousands of classified documents to the press. The contents of these documents shed light on the National Security Agency’s massive surveillance system. However, this system was not only being used against the United States’s enemies – U.S. citizens themselves were being monitored. This practice, a gross violation of the fourth amendment, was ruled unconstitutional.…
I can imagine that people would not want to help you if you don’t trust them and feel the need to spy on them. The debate of whether what Edward Snowden did was the right or wrong thing also seems kind of up in the air. Obviously releasing the information that he did got the U.S. government into quite a bit of trouble with other countries and angered many of its own citizens, but are the government’s actions of disregarding the rights of the people justified if it is for the sake of protecting the country. Personally, I don’t think it is with the extent that government has surveillance on everything and how much data they are actually keeping. It is also pretty unethical in the way that they use it to negatively impact innocent people’s lives if the movie accurately portrayed the targeting of the one banker from the middle east and his daughter.…
Every Heart Vibrates to that Iron String Society has created implicit standards and rules for communities to live by, some unfair and unjust. There are individuals amongst the communities that disagree with these unfair standards, and choose to rebel against society. While doing so, some view these individuals as remarkable men while others view them as imbeciles. These individuals are Chris McCandless and Edward Snowden. Both of these men are known for their reputation of being rebellious in society and choosing to live lives of isolation.…
Forward: When Edward Snowden revealed that the NSA was spying on us in 2012, I expected people to be outraged. I expected a massive public backlash that would lead to reform. By and large, the public’s reaction has been underwhelming. For one reason or another, government surveillance is a topic that many people don’t know about or don’t talk about. I’ve talked to people about surveillance before, and many of them were unaware of key details about it.…
Greenwald also sates “Taken in its entirely, the Snowden archive led to an ultimately simple conclusion: the US government has built a system that has as its goals the complete elimination of electronic privacy worldwide. ”(94) The government is taking away the privacy of every individual by checking everyone’s cell phones emails and…
