Recently, while out to dinner with friends, one of my friends pointed out that we were all playing with our smartphones. I looked around the restaurant and at almost every table I observed at least one person with a smartphone in hand. The current school of thought seems to be that smartphones are eroding communication between people. Smartphones have not only made communicating with people more convenient, but also have opened up avenues of communication for people that had limited ways they could communicate.
Smartphones are helping people stay in closer contact than they were previously able to, and this is due to more frequent contacts through social networks and text messages. The ways to get in touch with friends and family have increased dramatically through social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Skype. Communicating with a smartphone has added many different options to the way we decide we want to converse with someone. Now you can send a quick text, or a video message, and you can even have a live video conversation. Smartphones are now even playing a part in collecting data to help determine where help is needed for hunger relief organizations. The countless applications on smartphones for people with disabilities has given them options to communicate they did not previously have as accessible to them. Smartphones have revolutionized the styles we can communicate in methods that were only once imagined in a futuristic world. Who imagined people would be video chatting with someone across the world?
