Sleep is one of the most important factors a person does each day to survive. It allows the body to reset itself so that it can better work its function of living and improving the person 's physical health. Yet many people who don 't have enough hours in the day to do everything have to reduce the amount of sleep they receive in a night in order to complete other activities. This is especially true for teenagers, who most nights are frantically trying to finish writing essays and completing worksheets before the clock strikes midnight, or are busy participating in after school extracurricular that leave them tired and they return home late but still try to finish all of their school assignments. Most adolescents need at least eight hours of sleep each night in order to function properly and are biologically driven to sleep longer than adults do. If this amount is not obtained, a sleep debt is created. Sleep debt is defined as the cumulative effect of not getting enough sleep. All lost sleep accumulates progressively as a result, in larger and larger sleep indebtedness. Sleep deprivation among all ages can have a major impact on the mental and physical health of a person. The effects of sleep deprivation on a teenage body can affect the ability to function at school. Studies showed that sleep deprivation can affect mood and behavior, learning, physical performance, attention span, and cause major health issues.
