In my junior year of high school, the SkillsUSA advisors repeatedly approached me about the SkillsUSA Pennsylvania Western Region Leadership Conference. I didn’t know what it was until they eventually pulled me and a few top students from my school aside and told us about having a “tryout” to see who would best fit to become an officer at the leadership conference. Over 300 students attended, and when I saw all these students in one room, I fully understood how honored I should be to have been selected as an officer. Speaking in front of a room full of SkillsUSA members and advisors was an unforgettable experience. Being surrounded by hundreds of young leaders who were the kindest and happiest people I have ever met changed my perspective on the world. My leadership experience began when my supervisor and his colleagues had an important meeting to attend and had no one sitting in on the office for intake office hours, so he asked me and another intern, Isaiah, to sit in from 9 AM-3PM. My supervisor taught us the main component of this position in 10 minutes. At first, I was nervous because I was new to the agency and it was my first time performing front desk duties. But after a couple of clients I began to get more comfortable and confident with the process because I had performed similar duties when I was in my cubicle. At this moment I felt like I was a leader because I was put in a position where I had minimum training, but still could take control of the office duties, and according to my supervisor, my performance level was beyond expectations.…

My most significant leadership experience would be when I was in the Girls Varsity Tennis Team. I had been in the tennis team during my highschool years, for 2 years. During that time I learned a lot about being a leader, such as what it means to lead others, and what qualities a leader should have. When I first started playing tennis I started at the position on 2nd doubles, to me I took it as that I was not good enough to play against an opponent by myself on the court. Which was entirely true, because when I began playing I was not any good whatsoever.…

We also provided people with education about immunizations and hypertension so that they may live healthier lives. “Kevin Marx will be next year’s Science Bowl captain,” the club advisor announced. It was a cold February afternoon and our Science Bowl team was returning from the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, where the competition was hosted. Although our team did not make it past the third round, everyone knew they did their best and were excitedly discussing our last-minute victory over a competing school. As soon as Ms. Stephen -- our advisor -- finished her statement, the bus erupted with applause and words of congratulations floated through the air. This came as a shock to me, but I was proud of my achievement.…

Becoming the team captain of my high school's swim team was a feat most thought was impossible for me. As a junior in high school with quite a few seniors in front of me, this was unheard of especially with the large pool of juniors that also swam with me. I knew that if I wanted to become captain I had to rally the team better than anyone else and using my great memories from sophomore year of the strong leadership of our previous captains I was able to do this. I showed no fear in the opposing teams ahead of us and never showed any signs of weakness or defeat in practice as I cheered on the rest of the team.…
