The notion that being able to understand that your performance is below average performance is extremely beneficial in being a strong employee. You see this concept applied many times in sports, as I experience this throughout the coaches I have had in my lifetime. They often exclaim when results are not in our favour that these performances are not what we are used to and something must change in our behaviours. When a coach has singled me out for poor performance there are two different ways I could handle it. With a low positive identity, I could walk away from the game and quit on my teammates. However, with a high positive identity, I could take the criticism in stride and figure out a way to improve.
