When we get sick we make a trip to the doctor and get prescribed medicine. One common form of medicine prescribed is antibiotics. In addition, this form of medicine is used in the raising of livestock, but at a much larger quantity at 70% of all antibiotic use (The Overuse). So, what if I told you that too much of that drug can lead to harmful effects in our world? The issue of whether antibiotics should be used in the raising of livestock or not has been a recent and widely discussed topic. When animals get sick and need medicine, it is very inhumane to leave them to lead an unhealthy life, so banning antibiotic use completely is unreasonable (Benefits of Antibiotics). In cases where animals are sick and need medicine, administering proper care is important to ensure humane treatment to animals (Benefits of Antibiotics). When animals don’t receive such care, they develop fear and pain (Benefits of Antibiotics). When animals develop these feelings under human care it violates the scientific law of humane treatment. The scientific law of humane treatment states that animals should be healthy, well nourished, comfortable, and safe (Benefits of Antibiotics). Antibiotic use is clearly necessary to ensure these guidelines to humane treatment of not only livestock but all animals, and when animals are treated humanely, they are healthy.
