The Battle of Flamborough head In 1779, the American War of Independence was at its height and Spain and France had joined forces with the Americans against Britain starting the Battle of Flamborough Head. Spain and France's assistance at sea was beneficial because America's navy was very small and weak compared to the British. This naval battle has many causes, some leaders, events and results. There are many causes for the Battle of Flamborough Head. One cause started when a Frenchman named, Landais had traveled to America hoping to be a naval version of the Marquis de Lafayette. Operating in the North Atlantic, the american privateers often stopped at French ports for refitting and supplies. According to “Royal Navy” Though she was legally a neutral nation until 1778, France turned a blind eye to the presence of American privateers in French ports which made them good allies. "Royal Navy” also states, After the British defeat at Saratoga in 1777, the French signed an alliance with the Americans, and privateers as well as ships of the Continental Navy began openly using French ports as waypoints. The battle ended September 29, 1779 Pearson lost 2 ships out of 3. Bonhomme Richard Sank but still had victory. America circumnavigated the British Isle, captured many merchant ships and brought the war to England's doorstep.
