Over 100 years after his death, his body was brought back to the United States and was awarded the gold medal by the US Congress. When he was young, John Paul’s captain on the John died of yellow fever, so he took over the ship and steered it back to a bunch of relieved Scottish folk. Because of this, he was rewarded with ten percent of the ship’s goods. In 1779, John Paul Jones had all but three of his cannons knocked out against the Serapis, along with most of his crew. With some extreme courage he yelled at the British: “I have not yet begun to fight!” With that he collided with the enemy, jumped on the enemy ship, captured the enemy ship, and while his ship was sinking, he took the British ship back to the mainland with him. John Paul Jones led an adventurous life that included multiple interesting facts. John Paul Jones’s first position in the Navy was as a lieutenant on the USS Alfred, a 24 gun frigate. His next vessel was the USS Providence, and while a member of this ship he caused considerable damage along the coast of Nova Scotia. His next major goal was to capture the Drake, which he successfully did and brought it back to France. A famous quote was, “I have not yet begun to fight!” By writing a biography on John Paul Jones, I was able to expand my knowledge on John Paul Jones.
