Argumentative Essay: Should Abortion Be Illegal?

Improved Essays
On average, there are 293,066 sexual assaults on women ages 12 and up every year in the United States of America. If you do the math, factor in the leap years, that comes down to about one sexual assault of a woman anywhere from the age 12 and up every 107 seconds. What if some of these sexual assaults ended in pregnancies? About 5.0% of them do, although it may not seem like much, it 's important. By no means should abortion be promoted as a product in the supermarket, however that does not mean the option should be taken away from women who suffer from sexual assaults which are unfortunately often committed domestically or by someone they know. The definition of abortion according to dictionary.reference.com iS "The termination of pregnancy by the removal or expulsion from the uterus of a fetus or embryo prior to being capable of normal growth.” While pro-life supporters believe that abortion should be illegal, but what many of them are failing to acknowledge that if abortion was to be illegal, then even more unsanitary and unsafe abortions would occur, and more pregnant women would die. Presently, about 70,000 women die from unsanitary and unsafe abortions, a number that cannot be ignored.

Some people call themselves pro-life, I prefer to call myself anti-death. Most sane people would also agree that they are anti-death because they do not support the killing of innocent human beings. But what they fail to realize is that murder has been legal in the United States for the past 42 years. Abortion is defined as the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy but this is just a euphemism for the voluntary annihilation of an unborn child. In 1973, the Supreme Court made a decision on the case of Roe v. Wade ruling unconstitutional a state law that banned abortions except to save the life of the mother.…

They’ve disputed the future of the women and the child through debates with few if any compromises. Abortion being legal reduces death and maternal injuries caused by illegal abortions. Abortion needs to continue being legal not only because some mothers or parents are financially incapable of taking care of a child but because they’ll be in a household where they’d be mistreated, after all it’s essential for a woman to have control over her body; it's a fundamental right. America is known as a country of land of opportunities were things you might of thought were impossible or restricted can be transformed…

If abortion was legal worldwide then this would be much less of a problem. People may want an abortion for many different reasons, like not being prepared, money can be another problem, not having time or resources to take care of a baby. Especially in rape cases women may want to abort the rapist’s baby because it reminds them of the horrible act that happened. That is a completely understandable reason to get an abortion. Many undesired pregnancies may lead to economic deprivation and an on-going cycle of poverty and despair.…

The arguments generally used by pro-life supports is that they believe life starts at conception and by having an abortion, which means that the life of a child is being taken away. Continuing on from that point, they also believe that if a woman has been raped and chooses an abortion, they are punishing the child for crimes they did not commit. They also use the argument that putting a child up for adoption can be an alternative as with millions of families all over the world wishing to adopt, no child is ever unwanted. For those who pay tax, it is also considered unfair that taxpayers who do not support abortion are paying for something in which they do not approve of. Abortions make cause a lot of psychological pain and stress to the women and can also have many medical complications which is why pro-life considers abortions to be morally wrong.…

Denying a woman’s right to safely and legally obtain an abortion is a subliminal nod to undermine the importance of women. For rape victims, it tells society that if a woman is raped, it is her own fault and responsibility to bear not only the psychological effects of sexual assault, but also the physical burden of carrying an unwanted child made by an unwanted parent. This toxic victim-blaming is only one of the examples of society telling people it is okay to commit crimes, and telling the victims of crimes to be at fault. “Don’t wear provocative clothes,” or “They were just asking to be raped” gets tossed around so much these days without a second thought, but the people of today need to realize how much rape culture like this is damaging both women and men of all…
