Sex education in public schools has been one of the most controversial topics in Ontario in recent months. Children in public schools are susceptible to learning about a delicate topic from media and their friends. These kinds of sources may give misrepresentations and misinformation of the sexual content. Having sex education in public schools allows students to have proper education and information about body parts, senses, and functions, and stages of development. It benefits parents who are not able to talk about this topic with their children because they are not close enough to discuss the sexual topic or for religious reasons. It informs students about their bodies and its functions and also about their physical, moral and emotional development. Public schools should teach sex education to give students appropriate knowledge about safe sexual practices and hygienic procedures according to each grade. The curriculum will start with learning about body parts, healthy living, homosexuality, and masturbation then to intercourse depending on each grade.
Proper education and information allows students to have safe sexual lifestyles. Having sex education in public schools prevents sexual diseases such as HIV and STD’s. According to National Statistics each year one quarter of the estimated 12 million new cases of STD’s occur among teenagers (Statistics on HIV/AIDS, STDs and Unintended Pregnancy).
