The birds and the bees, knocking boots, intercourse, or making love whatever you want to call it, sexuality is one of the most natural things about human beings, along with things like breathing, blinking and even crying, it is something that naturally develops in all people at some point in life. Because this is such a big part of our society today, we should properly teach teenagers what their sexuality means, because if teens are not informed about the realistic outcomes of unsafe sex, such as Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), or unintended pregnancies, they could be vulnerable to make poor decisions that will change their life forever. The most effective way to get this message across to teens all over the world is to make a sexual education class that is mandatory in all public schools. Now, there are a few ways to go about teaching teens about not only their bodies but other people's bodies as well. The two main teaching styles for “sex ed” are “Comprehensive Sexual Education” and “Abstinence-Only-Until-Marriage-Sexual Education”. These are very different methods that have the same overall agenda….. to keep teens of today and tomorrow safe physically and emotionally.

The first problem is the fact that it uses fear of the unknown to intimidate teens. Criticizers of abstinence-only curriculums think that abstinence-only programs are ineffective at reducing the initiation of adolescents participating in sexual activities. Rather than research showing that abstinence programs are not effective, there are simply few studies that have examined the impact of abstinence-only education on student sexual behavior (Denny & Young, 2006). The studies that are available show that abstinence-only curriculums are effective in increasing knowledge and decreasing sexual behavior. The following section will present studies that examine abstinence-only sexual education. Family Action Model for Empowerment (FAME), an abstinence-only program, was created for parents and teens to develop more open communication, be able…

No matter what they are taught, teens are going to have sex. The average person loses their virginity between sixteen and seventeen. This is obviously before marriage and people are definitely not “abstaining themselves”. If people are going to have sex no matter what, they might as well be taught to protect themselves from any further harm. Before teaching comprehensively was called “destructive of religious beliefs” but the church is now more advanced and people know sex is natural and a common thing within the current society.…

I do feel abstinence should be taught in sex education classes because abstinence is the safest way not to get STD’S. Contraceptives are also not taught and discuss much about as much as it should be. In my opinion, abstinence should be discussed from 9 years to 18 years old in the schools. I think it’s not taught because not too many parents only believe abstinence alone should be taught without educating on contraception’s. However, I did teach my two daughter’s at an early age the benefits of abstaining from sexual relations of any kind until married and the benefits of abstinence from sex. However, in the Christian church many Christian influences contribute to making and keeping this decision.…

Overall, statistics in both the US and Europe show that abstinence-only education is wholly ineffective in attaining its goal of reducing the rate of teen pregnancy through delay and prevention of premarital sex. In fact, it has been shown to often have the opposite effect. Sex positive education, that emphasizes the use of protection and contraception, yields more positive results. Not only does it reduce the rate of STI transmission and pregnancy among teens, but it also delays and reduces teen sexual activity. It is a win/win situation and, as Europe has demonstrated, can be effectively implemented even among conservative and religious…

Abstinence-based sex education isn’t a practical approach to sex education because it doesn’t give students the necessary resources they need to prevent the consequences of engaging in any type of sexual activity. Teenagers need the proper facts about contraception and birth control to be able to take the appropriate precautions for when they decide to become sexually active. With abstinence-based programs there is no decrease in the amount of sexual activity that students are engaging in and where there is restricted information and education, there are higher rates of unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases/infections. Many times these programs will misconstrue important facts in regards to these and there can be an abundant…

‘Abstinence is key’ everybody claims, but not when it comes to educating our youth about safe sexual behavior. Many schools are beginning to introduce abstinence only education programs to their curriculum with the mentality that this will prevent high school students from engaging in sexual activity. This impractical method of prevention will not only hurt those being, or not being educated, it will also hinder our society. Abstinence-only education programs, many critics argue, use fear based models to scare teenagers into not engaging in sexual intercourse. Although this method may work for some, it is more dangerous than it seems.…

Comprehensive knowledge to these subjects will be provided in the classroom including: birth controls, the use of condoms to prevent STI/STD’s, sexual behavior, meanwhile also encouraging abstinence and delayed sexual activity. Few parents disagree with school’s providing the information to their children; although, the parents who do contradict may not be willing to provide information about this subject and the knowledge the adolescents need to know.
