Advocacy Case Study: Talia

Talia is a 17-year old biracial (Caucasian/Asian) female, and she is a senior in high school. She resides with her mother and a younger brother. Talia family is having problems with their finances. Talia’s parents separated when she was four years old, and she had little or no contact with her dad. Talia feels as if she has not familiarized herself with her Asian culture due to the absence of her father. Over the past year, Talia has experimented self-esteem issues due to developmental struggles. She is feeling a lot of pressure on plans for her future. During Talia junior and senior year, she attended a vocational program for cosmetology. Talia is also interested in teaching or possibly culinary school once she graduates.

Advocacy ensures that people who are vulnerable have a voice for the voiceless on their behalf for the injustice and policies that may impact them directly. “Advocacy promotes equality, social justice and social inclusion” (Dalrymple & Boylan, 2013). Advocacy is helping or assisting an individual in acquiring the services they need. “Advocacy involves stepping forward on behalf of the client to promote fair and equitable treatment or gain needed resources” (Zastrow 46). As a human service worker and an advocate for Talia, it’s my job to analyze the case study for Talia carefully. With the different information, I gather from this case

Therapeutic interventions such as assisting Talia to become capable of identifying and verbalizing individual needs, help Talia lower or reduce her fear of rejection, Help Talia family implement daily responsibilities for her that are age appropriate, and continue to monitor her progress and give positive verbal feedback when necessary. Case worker should also assist the parent ways to help build self-esteem and assist them to get Talia involved in different activities that will build her
