Introduction:
I have selected the Public health policy in smoking ban to provide an understanding of the key principles of the public health, discuss the key sociological and policy concepts and how these relate to health and healthcare. A case study will be used to describe the benefits of healthy life and the risk associated with unhealthy life style. I will also try to demonstrate an understanding of the strategies that encourage health promoting behaviours through health education, the role modelling and effective communication.

Sometimes this involves helping individuals; at other times it involves dealing with large factors (cultural, social or economic) that have an impact on the health of many people for example: age-group, ethnic group, locality, or country. (World Health Organisation) Acheson (1988) defined public health as ‘the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts of society’. This definition has emphasised the collaborative nature of public health work, which is normally seen as a collective rather than an individual view of the health needs and health care of a population Public health is a complex endeavour, requiring action to promote wellbeing, as well as to prevent illness (Tod and Hirst, 2014). A social model of public health recognises wider structural determinants of health including socio-economic, environmental and political influences (Dahlgren and Whitehead, 2007). In the most deprived communities, these determinants create multiple disadvantages that work together to reduce people’s health status (Tod and Hirst, 2014).
