Written by George Orwell, Animal Farm is the remarkable and classic political satire in which farm animals are used to symbolize the corruption of Socialist ideals during the Russian Revolution. Orwell's purpose for composing the book was to demonstrate how Communism fails to establish a perfect society. Because the animals have human-like qualities, it can also be considered a fable because it teaches a lesson. The laconic and daunting fable was written in 1945 when the Russian Revolution occurred. All the events and animals personify someone or something in Russian history. However, his idealism led to his downfall because he was no match for Napoleon's cruelty and savagery. Without remorse or hesitation, he sent Boxer to the glue maker for whiskey. Hence, the pigs assumed power in the new society and established themselves as the ruling class, "Four Feet Bad, Two Feet Good." Consequently, it was the abuse of language that was instrumental to the abuse of power in Animal Farm because it was used to exploit and control the other animals. Likewise, language and rhetoric can be much more effective tools of social control than violence. Because the other animals could not read, the pigs used slogans to brainwash the animals. While claiming to have their best interests at heart all working together in support of each other, the pigs were really using language as a way to keep the animals inspired and subservient through poems and commandments. Nonetheless, in order to justify their behavior, the pigs lie and distort the rhetoric of the Socialist Revolution by keeping the other animals in the dark and by sabotaging the perception of Major's vision of Socialism.
