George Orwell is the author of Animal Farm and he wrote it based off of what was going on in his life at that time. George Orwell was only his pen name because the publisher wanted to conceal his true identity. His real name was Eric Arthur Blair. He wrote Animal Farm in 1944 but it was only published in 1945 because nobody would publish it for its insult to Stalin. In the 1930's Orwell fought for the communists in the Spanish Civil War against their fascist leader. However, soon he began to see the terrible side effects of communism and that they could be just as bad as fascism. Therefore he switched to become a socialist. Socialism is basically a less extreme version of communism.
Animal Farm is an allegory of the Russian Revolution. Different animals in the story represent important players in Russia's history. We have pigs to represent people in power like Stalin and Trotsky. Dogs are the KGB and all other animals are the lower, working class. Orwell wanted to write this book to show others that communism has good ideas, but it never ends like the people planned. They took control to make everything better for themselves by making it worse for others. All of this was occurring during Orwell's lifespan and affected him tremendously. In Animal Farm, the lower, working class is being manipulated into thinking conditions have improved. This is only achievable because the regular animals are too simple and couldn't remember enough to know what was happening to them. Orwell himself grew up in a lower class in society which is why he initially became a communist. After his discovery, he wanted to help others by informing them of what communism would lead to. For those already under communist control, this book would hopefully let them perceive what was taking place in their own
