Policy makers opposing the capabilities approach would argue that reviewing the capability approach as a canopy of normative theories opens up space for more protective accounts of policy making that defend a mix of freedoms and the achievements, which Nussbaum’s version clearly rejects. She doesn’t sufficiently offer adequate reason behind her theories and her theory of social justice is proposed weakly. But what Nussbaum does add in from Capabilities and Social Justice is, “My aim in this brief presentation will be first to indicate why I believe other approaches to these inequalities are not fully adequate and the capabilities approach is needed. Then I shall mention some very general features of the capabilities approach to show how it can handle the problems other approaches fail to handle.” In which she does by claiming in Creating Capabilities: The Human Development Approach, “…the whole list of capabilities makes us seek policies that are not just formally fair, treating people similarly…refusing to approve arrangements that confer government approval on those sources of inequality.” The capabilities approach will give women the stable support in life they’ve been missing all along.
