Russia has played an integral part in the creation and evolution of the United States. From their influence under Catherine the Great through trade and diplomacy during the American Revolution, to their support of the Union during the American Civil War, Russia has and likely always will influence the United States. To fully understand Russia’s importance and a possible threat to the United States, we must understand what makes Russia what it is today. Throughout this paper, we will discuss the geography, infrastructure, and industries associated with Russia. We will identify the demographics, religions, and level of influence they have over the government. We will discuss their current political system, to include current and historical leaders that have helped shape the country to what it is today. Finally, we will investigate whether Russia will present an emerging threat to the United States now and in the future. Russia is the largest country in the world, extending over 17 million square kilometers, almost double that of the United States. It is located in Northern Asia, bordering the Arctic Ocean, extending from Europe to the North Pacific Ocean (CIA, 2015). The Russian landscape varies extensively, shifting between deserts, frozen coastlines, tall mountains, and giant marshes.
