They both had a hard time getting used to changing into a young adult. In Scout’s story, she had many people helping her grow up. It took some time before she realized that her responsibilities had changed. She often would still act as a child, as she would play pranks on neighbors, or even when she would simply not follow the rules given. This is very similar to Augusten’s story once again. As he was sent to Dr. Finch’s home, he realized that the other children were never given rules to obey. Children of all ages, would have sex, smoke drugs and simply rebel against authority figures. At first Augusten, also made bad life decisions like the rest of the children in the home. His life took many turns as he had gotten to love the Finch’s, even if they were not the best people in the world. The things happening in his life were all over the place, dealing with his mother and her issues and even dealing with his issues. In the book, there were times that he was sure that he was gay and there were times that he was sure that he wasn’t. There were times where he loved his mother and there were times when he hated her. There were times where he would make horrible decisions and there were times that he would make good decisions. It took him a while to get used to the fact that he had to grow up to survive. After some time, he finally did grow up and started to take care of himself, just like Scout
