When Precious’s principal found out that she was pregnant, she was given the opportunity to attend an alternative school. In the beginning the thought of her attending an alternative school was absurd and she did not want to attend. However, she took the initiative to attend school and to work on her education. Another protective factor was protecting those who she loved the most. In the movie, Precious proved how much she loved her children that she would never let anyone harm them. When her mother threatened her and her children, Precious left her home and did not let anything happen her to children. She made sure that her children had everything they needed and worked with her teacher to find local resources. Finally another protective factor was her being able to utilize resources. The squares are used to represent how she did not have a positive and close relationship with her parents. Precious wanted to make sure to keep her father at a distance in her life, but she was closer to her mother since she lived with her mother. The other shapes that are connected to Precious because these are positive and important relationships in her life. The symbol of the heart shows how she cares for her children and loves them. The circle represents her relationship with others that are not immediate family, but helped her to become a better student, parent, and person. The triangle represents her being able to open up with her classmates and being able to call some of them friends. The diamond helps to represent her willingness to continue her education and how important it is for her to write to explain her story to help other people understand how to live better lifestyles. Based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, Precious is in between self-esteem. The reason is because based on her story, she was able to understand her purpose and to continue to become a better person. She has gained the strength to fight her rights and protect her children. She has developed more respect for herself to know that with hard work, she can make it to the top.
