Project SELF interests caught my attention since sophomore year. In May of 2017, an unexpected news from my father came out of blue. My father was fired from his job. I was speechless because I worried about the future. Although, I realized my father worked at the tender age of seventeen, and moved twice to the United States twice in order to give his family the best life possible. As his daughter, it truly an honor to have a loving a father who taught me to grow up to be a strong person in life. I want this job to serve as a path to be a persistent person. This time is now for me to confront life just as my father did.

In my freshmen year, I was sexaully harassed by a senior while assisiting in the library. Those times were the darkest times of my life because I did not know who to go with to console the pain. My confidence went downhill, especially in my races because I would not be giving my best effort for being afraid. Even though my attacker left the school campus, that event brought chills down my spine. I had to make the choice of speaking up because I got tired not doing anything for a problem that was over two years ago. Once I was able to communicate with my parents about what was going on with me, I felt that warmth of my parents return to me. That light was once covered by a vast darkness illuminated my path. I felt I can trust any adult to help me. This may have gone a bit off track, but this incident took a major toll on my first half of high school because I could not view school as safe. I want this summer internship to improve my communication with others because interaction of ideas is important in any type of field whether helping the homeless or clarifying directions of a task. My expectations for this job is to work in an environment where I can interact with coworkers, and I can learn a few

The First Thing I Learned from Issue 3 in the book Understanding Rhetoric Every essay has a massage which might be for the good or bad of the people and every author’s goal is to make people read, understand, and believe his message in that essay. However, sometimes the wrong tone could make a great author look like a fool where a different tone could make him sound more interesting. The article “Miscalculation on Visas Disrupts Lives of Highly Skilled Immigrants” (2015), by Julia Preston, states the State Department and Homeland Security allowed the department to give anticipating immigrants news of them being able to take the next step to obtain a green card. The author provides background information about the situation, along with reasons as to why the incident occurred, and its impact on immigrants. Preston attempts to inform about the episode and provide an explanation to the immigrants involved, through the use of rhetorical appeals. Preston establishes ethos before the article starts, as she is a reporter of a reputable newspaper, which gives her credibility. She starts off her article powerfully by providing context for those who are unaware of the situation; in the beginning of September, the State Department told thousands of highly skilled legal immigrants that they “would be able to advance early to the next step: filing a formal application.”…

President Barack Obama’s actions have been questioned since the day he took the oath of office. These three articles address the constitutional limitations to his actions on immigration. Each article produces an individual view to the subject, including different tones and opinions, while maintaining objectivity and using rhetoric to convey their ideas. With this specific language, the authors are able to portray their view on the president’s plan in such a way that draws the reader in and allows them to understand different points of view and beliefs on President Obama’s congressional actions. The first article “The Constitutional Authority for Executive Orders on Immigration Is Clear” by Eric Posner sets a clear attack towards opposing…

President, I commend you on these matters, and I am not asking for retribution on this matter. I am asking for further, and harsher enforcement on these matters. Don’t be afraid to get tougher, the statistics show it can only get better from here. Should it not boggle the mind that citizens in the USA want rights for someone who we know nothing about, and could possibly hut us. Imagine the Kate Stinley case happening to hundreds of children nationwide.…

Rhetorical Analysis Introduction What is a rhetorical analysis and why is it important to understand the meaning of this term? ‘Rhetoric’ is the art of persuasion through language in any subject, which could be implemented by speaking and writing. ‘Analysis’ is the processing of breaks the whole concept into smaller pieces and then examining how these parts fit together into one compelling idea. English composition was never my strong nor favorite because of my knowledge of the grammar and organization in my writing. Taking English 101 is a jump start for me, because last year of high school my teacher focused primarily on English literature. The course has introduced me to rhetorical analysis, and swatching (imitating author argument). Throughout the semester and all of the papers written I can say that it was a good experience to write at a college level and the expectation from college professors is good for future courses that involve writing essays.…

From a young age, like the author, high expectations have been placed upon me, and vigorous measures were taken by my parents to ensure that the best education was available to me. Because I was expected to be a high functioning student, the vision my parents had of me allowed them to shape me into what they had envisioned. But, like the author's situation, the doors for success were opened for me, yet I had to be the one to walk through those doors. There comes a point where age and independence takes over my mind as I was less privy to the words of my parents. During this time, personal accountability is now the driving factor of success.…

Throughout my time in the Blugold Seminar class, I have developed and presented an abundant amount of skills that will prepare me for my future. One of these skills was my use of key rhetorical terms such as exigence, purpose, audience, rhetor, logos, kairos, pathos, identification, and enthymeme. The second skill I developed was the expertise in finding and evaluating a variety of source materials. Third was the use of images, sounds, and animations and understanding how they are the building block of 21st century communication. I have not mastered this fourth skill, but I have improved on it throughout the semester, and that is my ability to understand and enact revision as substantive change.…

Gardening was a ‘forced’ hobby for a good portion of my childhood. Since elementary school, I worked with my dad in our back yard; I would dig holes, carry bags of manure, and plant flowers and trees. I complained that it would be easier to go to the store and buy a bag of blackberries instead of toiling in the sun for hours to achieve the same thing. I never imagined that I’d end up gardening for fun. Every year, my brother and I would collect the fruits of our labor; every year, I’d appreciate my efforts more and more.…

In a series of three books entitled: Rhetoric I, II and III, the great philosopher, Aristotle, critically discusses all the necessary elements of a sound persuasive message (de Wet, 2017, p. 34). This assignment looks more closely at the three artistic proofs namely, ethos, pathos and logos, and demonstrates how Mmusi Maimane used them all to great effect during his State of the Nation Address (SONA) debate in 2016. Maimane’s use of metaphor during his speech, as well as the effectiveness of it, will also be discussed. 2. Ethos (Credibility) Ethos, which refers to the quality of credibility in a speaker (de Wet, 2017), is employed by Maimane throughout his speech.…

Never in my entire time as a student have I learned and exercised my English skills as I have this year. Every other year in high school it was going through the motions and simply trying to get a letter grade that satisfied my parents and the CP requirement for the school. I always thought that when people would preach “do not miss school or take shortcuts because you only cheat yourself out of your education” was so corny. Now that I have completed my first year in college I understand that my mentality was a big mistake and could have struggled much less if I had a better understanding of literature when I first got taught. Maybe a year ago I would not have seen myself writing at a higher level where I can make sense of whatever topic…
