Rhetorical Analysis: The Argument For Tuition Free Colleges

TITLE Rising college tuition in America is a serious issue for most students, causing the push for free college tuition to increase tremendously over the last few years. With the recent Presidential election and candidate Bernie Sanders pressing the issue of tuition free college, it has become of gargantuan focus among the American people. Because of this, many have posed their own arguments and research for, or against, free college tuition. America being the only major country without free public college tuition, makes many furious with the government. Both Keith Ellison’s (2016), “The Argument for Tuition-Free College,” and Lawrence Wittner’s (2015), “Why Tuition-Free College Makes Sense,” pose arguments for tuition free college. The use of ethos is to build character. Wittner and Ellison’s usage of ethos is to show that throughout American history the morale around college has changed from education, to a way to make money. This is Wittner’s main rhetorical device, and he uses it very well. One example of Wittner’s ethos usage is (2015), “The tuition squeeze on young Americans results largely from severe reductions in state and local funding for public colleges and universities, usually initiated by conservative, budget-cutting governments” (para 6). The only issue with this, is that America is a capitalist country and the government will only listen to facts, rather than ethos and pathos. Ellison used very little ethos is his argument, most likely because he realized that a capitalist country hold money in the highest regard, not emotion. Ethos would not provide much for Ellison’s argument, not with the way he has it set up. However, the little ethos he uses are very formidable and powerful. One example of Ellison’s ethos usage is (2016), “Once, a degree used to mean a brighter future for college graduates, access to the middle class, and economic stability. Today, student loan debt increases inequality and makes it harder for low-income graduates, particularly those of color, to buy a house, open a business, and start a family” (para 5).
