This definition should impact all areas of leadership with an organisation, whether it is dealing with people, both customers and employees, processes, decision making or good governance. All these areas need to be successfully managed using both the principles of good governance as well as ethics.
The King IV report on corporate governance for South Africa, 2016, states that effective leadership is about achieving the strategic goals of the organisations while ethical leadership deals with issues around transparency, accountability, fairness and responsibility. Processes within the organisation have been established to enable the organisation to function efficiently, but also to ensure that correct procedures are followed to ensure that the company adheres to the principle of good governance. These processes are generally a set of rules or a policy document.
As a responsible leader I need to ensure that my team is fully aware of the company processes that have been established as well as the reason for their existence. The ethical part of responsible leadership is how we deal with these processes. Regardless of the type of processes, as a responsible leader, I need to ensure that all my actions are in accordance with these processes. From time to time the nature of business changes and these process need to be modified accordingly. How we ensure that these processes are modified is indicative of our ethical conduct.
