If a person does not have the ability to tolerate the anger, fear, and frustration they face, it will be difficult to cope with certain situations. Being able to process cognitive information can help individual’s problem solve and create other situations in which they can cope and become resilient to unbearable circumstances. Also, individuals that are socially competent have strong social skills that provide them with peer support systems. These support systems in exchange provide the individuals with support to overcome the difficulties they face and thus, the individual is reliant to the adversity they face. Regarding therapy when a client is not resilient to the challenges they face, and they yet have discovered coping mechanisms to help them overcome the adversity. As a therapist, it is crucial to get to know the clients strengths and weakness so that therapist can aid their clients in the process of creating mechanisms to cope. For instance, if they experienced a severe trauma the client may feel that they can not undo what has already occurred. As a therapist given this predicament, my goal would be to establish an understanding of the client that it is not how one falls but how they rise after the fall that determines their outcomes. Instead of allowing the client to feel hopeless in their given situation my goal would be to install hope that there can be a better tomorrow if perceived it so to be. I would address the client's sense of self-efficacy, and personal identity. Allowing the client to explore who they are and help them come to the realization that their falls don't determine their success, but it is how they rise to the adversity they face that does. Furthermore, addressing how they feel about their cultures assessment of themselves. If it is negative, then we would have to work through it, and if it is positive, then that means that they don't accept what others label them to be. Eventually, the goal would be for the client to develop a sense of purpose in their lives. An individual that has a purpose for the future has goals, dreams, and expectations for the future. Allowing the clients to understand that there is still something to look forward to helps them to prepare mentally for the future and instills hope.
