Due to my past experiences and professional roles, my initial assessment of Susie was slightly biased. I worked at the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (CYF) in the past as a caseworker and I realized quite quickly that I was judging her while she was explaining her past experiences and current issues with CYF when she was being investigated for abuse on her children. Once I realized this bias I became more mindful of this bias as to ensure that I stayed in my professional role and continued to work with her through a lens of a Certified Peer Support.
Secondly, my inexperience of working with an individual like Susie with a Borderline Personality Disorder at first hindered my ability to understand why Susie would become extremely upset and distressed about minor issues and had extreme emotional reactions continuously. My inexperience with the diagnosis interfered at first with my ability to understand why Susie struggled and became so upset about minor things resulting in me feeling frustrated in my interventions with her and causing a lack of empathy on my behalf.
