Should Every American Citizen Be Required to Vote in National Elections?

For Americans jury duty is obligatory why is voting not? Many countries around the globe have some form of government where it is mandatory to vote. I personally think American citizens over the age of eighteen should be required to vote. Requiring them to vote will let them voice their opinion, they cannot complain that their candidate did not win, and it will strengthen the democracy of America. A democracy without voting is not a democracy at all. The American population has the right to vote but yet many do not participate. Ergo, I think United States citizens should be required to practice their right and voice their opinion in elections. Fifty-

There is one big difference in my eyes here. When you vote for the president, you are an important impact to the future of the country. It could be positive or negative, but if a person is forced to contribute to that impact, they may not even care. They could negatively impact the polls without a care in the world just because it is mandatory, where if there was no mandatory voting that person would of just refrained from contributing.…

Everyone should have a voice and use that voice to help guide this country. In a democracy the people are responsible for electing it’s leaders. If everyone that can vote does not vote then it’s not truly democracy. In the past two elections this country has chosen Barack Obama to lead it. Many positives and negatives have resulted since.…

Being forced to participate in an activity against your will is not a good feeling. Often a democracy like the United states will require you to do something without them slowing down to realize the many consequences the particular topic can generate. The right to vote is a big deal, it’s so important that most people equate it with democracy itself, but Americans should not be required to vote because it does not make our democracy stronger, there would be more uninformed voters voting, it would cost the nation a lot more money, and choosing not to vote is a right. Compulsory voting should not be permitted because it wouldn’t make our democracy any stronger. Mandatory voting will only make our country weaker because voting “just to vote” will encourage ignorant voting (Document G).…

    Voting In The Movie Selma

After watching Selma, and witnessing the struggles endured in pursuit of civil rights in America; I think it is extremely important to vote as an American citizen. After seeing what Oprah Winfrey's character had to go through to get approved to vote was very mind opening. Constantly having to come back knowing more and more information that over half of the average American today does not know is absurd. Also witnessing the way African Americans were treated during peaceful protest shows the importance of voting as well, not just because of what they had to go through for everyone regardless of race and gender to vote but to be sure that times never reverse to the way that they once were. Voting in America gives the people a voice of how…

A main argument in favour of compulsory voting is that there will always be a legitimate representation in Parliament of people from all socioeconomic groups and the results will produce an absolute majority as every citizen votes. In a democratic system of government there should be compulsory voting as it is a civil duty. It is a civic duty for citizens to vote for their…

Should American Citizens be required to vote Throughout the years, many citizens have fought for the right to vote. Citizens of other countries view the United States as being lucky just to have the opportunity to help choose the person who will be in charge of our country or to help decide how our constitution will be amended. American citizens should be able to vote for many reasons, first being U.S. citizens are the voice of America and are our future leaders and drive the political process. The second reason mandatory voting should be require is because it can get American citizens involved in the government, and lastly mandatory voting will sustain a democratic government. I believe that American Citizens should be able to vote for many reasons, one of the reasons that American citizens should be required to vote is the simple fact that American citizens are the voice of America and without our voices this country would have no one to represent us as a whole; the American Citizens represent the American population.…

    Why Americans Should Vote

Americans should vote to express their beliefs about politics. In the election you have a chance to vote for what you think is right and what you believe in. Take pride in being an American citizen and being able to vote for president. Every single vote is important, in the George Bush and Al Gore election in 2000 it came down to just a couple hundred votes so your vote does matter. If a couple hundred…

The Voice Of America in Chains Voting is a large part of what America is today. “Government of the people, by the people, for the people”. The voice of the people is what makes the big decisions in America and mostly through choosing who will represent us in our government in elections. This makes the vote valuable, because it has the power to make decisions and change outcomes. Although many will argue that Mandatory voting will provide a better representation of the Consensus, it will actually demote civic virtues and limit individual freedoms.…

    Voting System In Canada

Certainly disagreements on violating the right to vote will be discussed. Mandatory or obligated voting sounds rigid, brutal or even disrespectful to the community. As terrible as it sounds, I personally think that the mandatory vote is not bad at all, just “forces” or demands the citizens to vote in elections. The individual is not required to vote for a person or a party specifically; he or she can still cast a ballot. This procedure is believed to increase the voter turnover, to obligate voters to contribute with the election.…

The United States of America are among the lowest amount of voter participation. Some people think the answer is compulsory voting, but is that the right idea? No, Americans should not be required to vote because it goes against our rights and is time consuming, it decreases voter satisfaction, and it increases the amount of uninformed voters. Compulsory voting may be the answer to other countries problems, but not the US. Americans should not be required to vote because it goes against our rights and it is time consuming.…

    The Right To Voting

The right to vote is one of the most important, fundamental rights given to American citizens. Yet, rather than seeking to make more convenient and accessible for citizens interested in engaging in the political process, state governments focus rather often focus time and resources on restricting voting and making the process more complex and difficult. States governments have the authority to determine not only who is allowed to register to vote, but also how the process of voting itself operates. Some states require ID just to cast a vote, such as Mississippi, which placed new restrictions on voting in 2016 which require certain forms of photo ID. Other states, for example Nebraska and Florida, place restrictions on early voting by taking…

“…forcing people to the ballot box could affect the "strategic calculations" of 21st century political parties, which often focus on dividing the electorate by playing up certain issues and mining support from the resulting passion.” [Alex Ballingall] When fewer people turn out for voting it makes it easier for political party’s to vote themselves into power. This outcome goes against the will of the people, which is more undemocratic than forcing a citizen to participate in their political system. An extreme example of a political party taking advantage like this is setting up fake election polls to destroy unfavorable votes. “…people were fraudulently tricked into travelling to nonexistent ballot sites during the 2011 federal election.”…

    Minimum Voting Age

    • 218 Words
    • 1 Pages

The proposal to reduce the minimum voting age from 18 to 17 is a blasphemous idea that shouldn’t be considered by the United States government. 18 is the right age for citizens to gain the right to vote as this has been the rule since the 26th amendment was passed in 1971. There have been no objections to this rule and changing it would create unneeded strife with possible protests of this change. There also isn’t a major need for reducing the minimum voting age as it’s only a one year year difference. Since 17 year old voters would only be able to vote for local candidates, the voter turnout wouldn’t be affected as much as not many people really care about their local elections such as city council and school board elections.…
