Rene Magritte Therapeutist Essay

Rene Magritte’s The Therapeutist is an amazing piece of art. Rene used surrealism and some cubism to show that opening-up to others, and supporting them, can help set them free from their problems. This piece of artwork was completed in 1937. The painting protrays an image of a rusty metal bird cage, that is housing shelter for one white dove, and is holding up another on square wood plank on the outside of the cage door, which is sitting on a man’s lap. To add in, this man is holding a cane in his right hand and a dark leather sack in the other. The image also shows a dark orange-red blanket Draped on the cage covering the back and sides. Furthermore, there is a hat sitting at the top of the cage and on top of the draped red blanket. In addition, the Background, the bird cage is sitting on a sandy cliff at the beach, with the light …show more content…
Rene painted this portion of the picture very delacutyly to represent a felt blank draping over the rusty metal cage as the breeze slightly forms the blanket around sides of the cage. To add in, the image of the red blanket helps support my thesis that “Opening-up to others, and supporting them, can help set them free from their problems.” Because, the red flowy felt blanket represents someone who is hiding or trying to cover up their feelings. Another way to put this example, is that the blanket represents a cover, like a tarp, which in this case the cage represents the holding cell of the feelings. In this piece, the blanket has many bumps and divots, as it drapes over the bird cage, which is holding one white dove. The dark shadows in between the divots in the blanket draw our eyes up the large thin blanket, which creates movement in the painting. To add, it draws the viewer’s eyes straight to the felt boater hat, which is located on the very top of the cage. Altogether, the form of the red blanket adds a center balance to the

Along with being simple, the objects in the painting are centered in the composition. This symmetry helps to balance out the work and draw the eye to the center of the piece and towards a large iceberg, which is the dominant form in the painting. This iceberg towers over the surrounding landscape, setting a scale for the work and adding weight to the painting. However, while the main object in the painting is very large and takes up much of the mid-ground area of the painting, the composition still appears spacious due to the inclusion of a background, and the open areas painted between the foreground and…

This is exemplified in his use of oil paints. As a result, Miguel Cabrera was able to paint in a variety of textures and he provided another level of sensory awareness to viewers. An individual can clearly distinguish the velvet on the chair, the satin robe and underskirt, leather gloves, and lace-lined shirt. Color is an important factor in this painting as well. The dark background is highlighted by the rich colored walls and the curtain provides a direct contrast to the bright color red.…

This work of art was created by a French artist named Pierre Bonnard, famously known for being a late practitioner of Impressionism art (Sutton 1). Though this image was created outside of the Impressionism time period, it is still labeled as an Impressionist piece of art. The subject matter of this piece is inside of Bonnard’s kitchen. Inside of the home, known as “Ma Roulette” or a French name for “My Caravan”, Bonnard’s wife is pictured leaning against the windowsill, as well as the couple’s two cats on either of the two chairs located near the table (Art Stacks 1). As stated above, Bonnard is considered a late practitioner of Impressionism, and impressionistic characteristics can be seen throughout this piece.…

The painting focuses on a rendition of the top two figures of a totem pole. The second highest is an open mouthed face, and the very top of the pole is a “thunderbird,” a mythical creature often representing strength and power in Native American beliefs (Gadacz). Carr travelled across British Columbia “making drawings and watercolours, which became the basis for oil paintings... in dramatic and powerful sculptural style full of dark and brooding energy” (Stokstad 545). While this description is about another of Carr's works, Big Raven (fig. 2), it applies to most of her renditions of the Northwestern Canadian landscape, and certainly fits with Thunderbird's dark greys, greens, and browns. Thunderbird is an image dominated by clear defining lines, and a distinct, familiar colour palette.…

The Great Depression from 1929 to 1933 was perhaps one of the darkest times in the United States history. Millions of people had lost their jobs and savings, parents were not able to provide food for their children, and desperation had spread to every single corner of the nation. In the meantime, this greatest despair was to become the cradle for many outstanding artists and their works to sparkle. In 1931, the middle of The Great Depression, the painting titled View of New York was executed by an American painter and photographer named Charles Sheeler Jr. in New York City.…

Insanity is the state of being mad and outrageous. It can drive people to do foolish or irrational things and it can emotionally and mentally change someone, making them a different person. The theme of insanity is depicted in Pablo Picasso’s Cubist Style Self Portrait. In this artwork, the various symbols of madness can be connected to that of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart”, the story of an insane narrator and his obsession with another man’s eye, which leads him to kill the man. Picasso’s Cubist Style Self Portrait, and Edgar Allan Poe’s…

The artist included these dark creepy looking birds in two of his artwork gave the theme of human nature, especially with birds looking like they are flying away from something. By the end of the 1800s art was considered a subject of study just like science and math. For an artist to be taken seriously and considered a proffesional attending an art college was a neccesity. There they learn about line techniques, shading, colouring etc. Some artists believed that art was meant to be “studied” in schools. Art was meant to be felt like an emotion and the lines show flow from the conciousness to the paper.…

La forme of the poem tells this tale of simplicity, whereas the fond is where the bird as a symbol for hope, patience, and freedom becomes fully evident. The relationship between the bird and the painter is complicated yet beautiful. In the exact same way that if a painter is able to seek out a bird, wait patiently for it, tend to its surroundings with care, and test to see if the bird will sing, man must set goals and wait patiently to take action, have hope during the process, and finally work carefully to achieve the goal. If in the end man is happy, in the words of Prevert, one can “ecrivez votre nom dans un coin du…

Edward Hopper’s 1927 oil painting, Automat, shows a lone woman sitting in an automat and through Hopper’s use of color and geometric structure, he depicts the loneliness and despair of this woman. The main focus of the painting is a single woman sitting at a table gazing down at the table where her cup is at. The woman is dressed very nicely, she is wearing an emerald green coat with brown fur trim and a yellow cloche hat. The brim of her hat appears to have been pulled down, slightly covering her face, and she has on only one of her gloves.…
