However, these two methods have different approaches. One of the first differences is the medical approach and the counter, a holistic approach. The medical approach relies on the medical model, which is flexibly designed to treat the present problem. In this model, a clinician would only examine the problem and diagnosis a condition. The client is viewed as their disability as they receive their treatment. The presenting symptoms a client may express are based on a syndrome or disorder. These treatments are evidence-based practices, have an immediate effect on individual and have a high impact. There is also criticism in the mental health field that suggests that the medial model is reductionist. It does not take into account the whole person and at times may be inaccurate in diagnosing the client. The medical model views the baseline to be a “normal” person. If someone does not reach that standard, then they are viewed as “abnormal.” It lacks the ability to consider the client’s environment and how it might affect the person. Conversely, psychiatric rehabilitation uses the holistic approach views the client as a whole person with different systems working in conjunction with another. The holistic approach (holism) looks at the client’s psychologically, socially and environmentally. It is a multidimensional approach to mental health. Holism does not …show more content…
The traditional psychiatric practice is based on the treatment approach. This approach relies on the notion of a treatment leading to a cure for a disease. The relationship between the professional and the client is based on “fixing” the client’s problem. This is also an intervention method that is used by clinicians for people with mental illness and substance abuse. It works to cure the presenting problem, or if not possible, it decreases the existing symptoms (Pratt et al., 2014, 9). Contrarily, the rehabilitation approach works to help the person recover from their disability. It is a process that consists of helping in the individual’s growth. Recovery involves being intergraded within the community and their environment. This approach is intended to reduce the affect the illness or disease has on the individual (Pratt et al., 2014, 9). The rehabilitation approach is an extensive practice that is specially catered to the individual’s needs and works toward strengthening resilience. (SAMHSA,
