Reflection On Pelican Pointe Assisted Living

During my time volunteering at Pelican Pointe Assisted Living I fell in love the residents. Each one of them lived radically different lives and were unique. I lived for their stories, pointed advice, and banter. Much of the reason I began working there was because I missed my grandmother when she passed away and I had always enjoyed the company of her and her friends. Just as each member of the residential community is unique so are their needs. Of all the people that helped in achieving the best quality of life for the elderly, I resonated most with the occupational therapists.
The ones I have spoken with say that a great amount of creative thinking is required in executing the most effective treatment. For instance, a lady named Naydean that I had grown particularly attached to had osteoporosis which made it painful and dangerous for her to do many activities she had been doing the majority of her life. She is a bit of a trouble maker, fantastically funny, and is completely suspicious of everyone which is why she enlisted me in accompanying her to her occupational therapy sessions. The therapist would listen to specific troubles she would have like not being able to wash her dishes because she couldn't stand for too

Many times I've witnessed residents near tears because they can't do what they used to be able to do. I would work with my patients in designing ways for them to still complete their tasks with dignity and confidence. Everything in life is about mindset. I can't imagine what it would be like to live with limited mobility in a residential home for the last stretch of life. The feeling of uselessness leads to hopelessness which can result in abuse of medication and suicide among the elderly. Creating away to prevent this by ensuring in my patients that they are as independent and capable as they ever where will be my

In the beginning, I elected to volunteer at Trinity Nursing Home since it was an atmosphere I missed. What started out a way to accumulate time for a class quickly turned into an anticipated encounter. Trinity homes offer mostly long-term care and also temporary amenities to a large percentage of older adults and illnesses. According to Trinity Homes Welcome page, they have operated since 1948 offering 24-hour care in a home-like setting. In addition, to around the clock care, specialized observation is available to 230 individuals.…

When I decided to volunteer at the Del Amo Gardens Care Center, I wasn’t quite sure if I was emotionally ready. In March of 2013, my grandpa suffered a very severe stroke. It caused so much damage that it paralyzed half of his body, so we had to put him in a nursing home. Shortly after starting my volunteering, however, any negativity faded away as I was eager to assist with the activities.…

The needs of residents in a nursing and long-term care facility There are numerous things that residents in nursing and long-term care facilities need, whether those residents are long term or short term. First and foremost, what all residents need and deserve is respect. Nursing facility residents need to be included more in the decision making with their care, whether that be involving their treatment and medication protocols or other items. Another item that some may see as a want rather than a need is human interaction; this could be in the form of volunteer visitors or the STNA’s actually having time to talk.…

Assisted living care has a primary focus “to provide personalized, resident centered care in order to meet individual preferences and needs”. These facilities provide more than just health and medical care, which is why individuals who settle in assisted living facilities are typically referred to as residents, not patients. Long-term care and nursing homes are terms often used interchangeably with assisted living. Around 54% of the residents in assisted living are over the age of 85. In a proportion of these establishments (45%) resides patients who suffer from mental irregularities, such as Alzheimer’s disease or dementia (3).…

Volunteering at Wisconsin Lutheran Care in Wisconsin I had the opportunity to observe geriatric care. While the facilities were well maintained and the technology at that time seemed appropriate, the treatment that these individuals received was subpar. The clinicians showed little eagerness to go above and beyond and treated the patients as if every one of them was the same. The patients received no personalization in their care and therefore, I felt that they were not receiving the type of commitment that I would expect from the clinicians. There was clearly a lack of care for this underserved community.…

My grandparents introduced me to Occupational Therapy. My grandma, having been diagnosed with a rare neurological degenerative disease, had a stroke that impaired her fine motor skills. My grandpa, although I was not alive at the time, was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre in his 50s and was told he would be paralyzed at midlife. I watched OTs rehabilitate my grandma after her stroke so that she could complete important daily tasks again, like holding a pencil and writing with clarity. I was fascinated to see how small weekly advances turned into huge progressions in a month.…

This knowledge allows nursing home administrators to implement the necessary nursing care, drug administration or rehabilitation to successfully treat a resident or improve their standard of living. Communication skills and very important and clinical experience in bedside manners are essential for working with residents with possible mental impairments. Nursing home administrators act as the patient’s liaison between staff and doctors. They must ensure quality care for a resident by communicating instructions or results as needed from both parties, while also ensuring frequent visits by nurses and physicians. They also have to utilize their effective communication skills to navigate the emotional dynamics associated with counseling residents and their families in the transition to nursing home care.…

The Good and the Bad in a Nursing Home. May 9, 2012 is the day that I started working at Adams Lane Care Center. I expected to go into work and it was going to be just how my classes explained them; however, it was much different. On the day I started at Adams Lane, I learned about how badly the residents can be treated by the staff, I learned that family and friends are one of the most important concepts in life, and I learned that life is a lot shorter than what we think. Before I started at Adams Lane I thought that the aides, nurses, and everyone at a nursing home treated a resident nicely and with respect.…

For my reflective essay I have chosen to look at the challenges of working with older people in a health and human service setting and in particular how this would challenge me to work as an effective practitioner in the discipline of nutrition. In the last five years I have worked and spent time with older adults from different settings, some who are healthy and engaged in all areas of their lives, living independently and contributing to their community. I have also spent time with older adults who are determined to live out their years in their own home despite chronic pain, disease and social isolation and finally I have worked with older adults living in aged care facilities who have multiple conditions, prescribed multiple medications…
