May 9, 2012 is the day that I started working at Adams Lane Care Center. I expected to go into work and it was going to be just how my classes explained them; however, it was much different. On the day I started at Adams Lane, I learned about how badly the residents can be treated by the staff, I learned that family and friends are one of the most important concepts in life, and I learned that life is a lot shorter than what we think. Before I started at Adams Lane I thought that the aides, nurses, and everyone at a nursing home treated a resident nicely and with respect. Some of them were in their fifty’s and sixty’s while others were over one hundred years old. I have had many of my favorite residents pass away over the two years that I have worked at Adams Lane. While none of them get any easier, I know that they are not suffering anymore. They are in a better place and not in pain. I have had residents tell me to live life to its fullest, because once it is gone and your children put you in a nursing home, there is no getting life back. Working in a nursing home has taught me many important values, as in not to hold grudges. Residents will tell me all the time to let the past go, they say that there is no point in being mad because one cannot change the events that have happened in the past. They also tell me that being happy is the most important part of life, so if something does not make one happy then make sure it gets changed. For example, if one is not happy with their job, they should go to college and do something that is going to make them happy. If one is not happy with the person they are with then it is time to find someone that will make them happy. My residents have made me realize that life can be much shorter than what I expect it to
