A 2009 study in Psychology Today shows that suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for more than 30,000 deaths. The overall rate was 12.0 suicide deaths per 100,000 people. Although this rate is much lower compared to various developed countries such as Japan (21.7), South Korea (28.1) and France (14.7) and the Chinese region of Hong Kong (12.2), only the United State has been registering an increasing rate of suicide; the other areas mentioned are recording a decreasing rate.
The reason why depression affects people enough to make them consider committing suicide is because the thinking of a person with depression will differ from that of a mentally healthy person. The resulting imbalance of judgment can easily lead an individual to not understand or even be aware of the ways and options that are available to help them release their pressure and stress. Once a person is sufficiently disabled by depression or sadness to be unable to recall the happy past he or she had and is unable to imagine a happy future, he or she is in danger of losing the will to live. Sometimes a state of depression can deepen to the extent it takes over an individual’s body and mind. All too frequently, in such extreme cases, the pain of depression becomes overwhelming and causes people to choose suicide as the best way for to extricate themselves from such a painful…
