Suicide is a prominent and serious epidemic, which can affect any person. Suicide is often related to mental illnesses such as depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety disorders. Mental illnesses among adolescents, however, can be hard to spot. It can be confused for just basic behaviors while growing up, many parents may not know the difference between angsty teenager behavior and purposeful isolation. Add the many expectations that are often forced upon teenagers when they start high school, with pressures of college and social situations, many teenagers may feel hopeless. Teenagers have mental illnesses and commit suicide because of said expectations forced upon them by society.

They begin to take very important standardized tests, grades start to really matter, they have to look at colleges they want to attend and scholarships they wish to apply to. All of this can be very overwhelming to someone who might still be treated as a child. Especially when high school seems to determine the outcome of how successful the future is for them. Graduating high school and going into college to get a bachelor's degree is the new standard to getting a good job and career. In the very near past, teenagers weren't expected to pursue a college career, if they did it was an important attribute but not necessary. Now, getting a bachelor's degree is about the equivalent of getting a high school diploma. It's expected as the lowest level of education one can have to succeed. This is a large amount of pressure to mount on the shoulders of a seventeen or eighteen year old. Even though eighteen year olds are legal adults, they are by no means mature, and such heavy pressure can be hard to cope
