Racism has provoked inequality among Americans for centuries. Although it has been claimed to have dissolved, racism is still apparent in the very set up of our nation. It pulls apart the unity of our nation by forming groups that in time will break the equality and freedom given in America. The ideal of racism still exists in today’s society, having found new ways to insert itself into our everyday life.
As segregation and slavery have faded from American culture it is socially accepted that, with that, racism too has taken leave. One glance at our society and you can see that racism still is existent. Even though stating racism in public is not socially accepted in America now, people have found ways of being racist through other ways. For example, people have used racism as a joke to get approval. “There’s been a lot of talk… about “hipster racism” or “ironic racism”[Source C] Joking only goes so far, this hipster or ironic racism allows for racism to seem as a social norm. Similarly, it is not only white people who have used racial commentary and actions. Some “blacks feel they have a right to be racist [Source H]. This produces the same negative outcome. Racism is derogatory and it is a severe form of bullying. America is a blend of a lot of different backgrounds as “we live in a race conscience, not a race blind society [Source B]. This presents people the idea of there being a difference between each other, one being higher than the other. This thought makes them think it is okay to make fun of other for being different.
Skin color should not be a determining factor as to what kind of person you are and what opportunities you should have in life. Unfortunately, the world has made race such a important ideal. Although it would be nice to see racism as a thing of the past we must still actively fight to distinguish this destructive initiative. So how will we destroy the remnants of racism?
