Around the world, Muslims are perceived as dangerous. At airports we are “randomly” selected,we are labeled as terrorists all over the media, and we cannot make a simple invention without being wrongfully accused. Everything was represented as it is due to the horrifying world event, 9/11. The effects of 9/11, the significant fueled incident that occurred at a high school, and the rise of social media may not have directly influenced my life, but the influence of these events will always play a role in my future. On September 11, 2001, a group of men, who claimed to represent Islam, hijacked 4 planes and drove two of them into the twin towers. This shook both the American and Muslim world. Unfortunately, he was wrongfully accused of creating a hoax bomb. He was both humiliated and called a terrorist. When he was brought into questioning, one of the five police officers said, “That’s who I thought it was,” regarding to his race and religion. It is awful that a teacher, who is supposed to be a role model, almost ruined this bright young student’s potential because of her fear of Islam. But despite this situation, some good has come out of it. President Obama invited Ahmad to the white house with this following tweet, “Cool clock Ahmed. Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It’s what makes America great.” Mark Zuckerberg, the creator of FaceBook, along with many famous figures reached out to Ahmed (Fantz and Stapleton 1). This world event has not personally affected me but it has influenced me. It has shown me that I have to work harder than most to acquire what I want in life. Racial discrimination is an enormous problem in the United States. I personally have experienced this problem. At one point in my life, my heart was set on becoming a pilot. One day in class, the teacher was going around the room calling out students. When it was finally my turn to tell the class what I wanted to become in the near future, I announced that I wanted to be a pilot. One student called out, “Do you
