RSOC Journal Entry # 1
Garibaldi Soedarjo
The site which I am engaging is the Estrella Family Services. Estrella Family Services is a non-profit organization that provides child care services. The program is not only for children age 3-12 years, but it also offers support services for parents. All of its location is in San Jose, including its corporate office. The agency has partnered with three schools: Gardner, Galarza-Hammer, and River Glen Elementary school. All three schools are part of the San Jose Unified School District. The agency offers a variety of services such as extended daycare programs (7 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and developmental screenings. It has also partnered with Paseo Senter, an apartment complex in San Jose, in establishing a childcare program there. The organization also has a summer camp program for low-income children.
I thought the programs which Estrella Family Services offered is very noble. The

I only saw a handful of children during orientation. The supervisors did a good job in explaining the program. One of the things I remember them say is that the boys will cling on to male volunteers. The reason is that many of the children do not have a role model at home. Knowing this made me motivated to attend community engagement.
Before my first day of community engagement at Gardner, I had absolutely no enthusiasm. In SCU my earliest class starts at 10.30 a.m. My engagement hours are from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., so I was not happy when I had to wake up at 8 a.m. But, when I first went into my assigned classroom, my mood changed completely when I saw the children. When I saw the children’s happy faces, I could not help but be happy as well. I started my day dancing with the children. Most of the children seem excited about dancing. After dancing, the children were split into different tables, and each had its own
