I have noticed that over the course of this year he is coming to school more frequently with his hair unwashed and not looking as clean as usual. While it would be easy to just blame his mother and talk about how she doesn’t keep him clean, I look at the bigger picture. He is a completely dependent 18-year-old young man with the cognitive ability of a two year old. He does not walk and cannot do anything functional for himself – he is basically an 18-year-old toddler that is still crawling. Mom is a short woman who relies on only family for help with John’s care, she has expressed in meetings that she wants to do everything for him. I have known John for almost three years and while is clothes can be worn out a bit, he was always generally neat and clean, with exception of his hair wash. Due to his size and behavior issues it is very difficult to get him safely in and out of the tub, so his brother comes over and helps once a week or so. After looking at the picture as a whole, I have to wonder if there is a change at home, or if his mother is finally reaching the point where she needs outside help in caring for him. Unfortunately it is out of my current role as an aide to reach out to her, so all I can do is encourage the teacher to bring up the subject in the IEP meeting next month.
