Identity status
John Bender is a victim of child abuse who acts like “the criminal” at his school because he lacks attention and direction, has a weak sense of trust, little autonomy and no commitments. According to Erikson, John Bender “The Criminal” is suffering from role confusion which is “lack of direction and definition of self” (Later Adolescence, March 29, 2016, Slide #6) and occupies the identity diffusion status which is “a state in which there has been little exploration or active consideration of a particular domain and no psychological commitment” (Later Adolescence, March 29, 2016, Slide #12) under Marcia’s identity status. When he try to open up to the other kids about his situation with his dad and why he acts the way he does, Andrew and the others didn’t want to believe him. This caused John to become really upset and start smoking marijuana away from them. All John wanted to do what open up and interact with this other students to see if he can trust them. Yet they all fail at first which lead to John feeling rejected one more time and get aggressive. The reason for this is that growing up I was both consider one of the popular kids in High School along with being a nerd. Just like Claire, I used to skip class once or twice to go shopping or hang out with my friends but instead of not caring about school, I will actually get in contact with one of my classmates to see what I missed for class that day and hand in the work the next day which is something that Brian would do. Although my authoritative parents have always provided a secure base for me by allowing me to voice my own opinion and letting me decide what I want to do, the pressure of succeeding in school and graduating from college have always being there. They were flexible in that when they found out that I had skip classes, instead of screaming at me like other parents would, they will just ask me if I actually got my work done for each class. Education to them is and will always be a priority and that is a huge pressure that I carry on my shoulders to make them proud and succeed academically. They don’t expect me to be a straight A student but I am expected to not get lower than a B- on any of my classes to keep my Honor roll status.
