“Legal scholars have called for policy changes that would require safeguards to reduce the risk of false confessions.” (CITE) there is a movement towards bettering the system and ensuring more true confessions than those false ones. There should be an implementation of more safeguards, and also the use of more expert testimony from psychologists to ensure such confessions are in fact, true or not. Although people might have views that they will never confess to a crime they have not committed, there should never be an exact certainty of whether that statement might be true in a situation where an actual case and under the right pressures this might be the only way to presumably ‘solving the problem’. The importance of false confession in the psycho-legal subject still a developing issue.…
The purpose of a forensic psychologist is to accumulate information concerning the defendant by the means of assessment and results, interviews, as well as information from third parties. The material is presented to members of the court (e.g. judge, attorneys, and jury members) to assist with selecting the appropriate punishment (Heilburn et al, 2003). Forensic psychologist provided expert testimony specializing in mental health diagnosis as it relates to legal proceedings meeting the Daubert standard (e.g. has the assessment been peer reviewed, the reliability and validity of the assessment, just to name a few (Heilburn et al, 2003; Hugaboom,…
Role of Psychology in Trial Consulting The controversial trial of OJ Simpson has undoubtedly been a great contributor to the increased popularity of the trial consulting in high-profile and high-stake cases. During the trial, a consultant named Jo-Ellan Dimitrius with a PhD in criminology picked the jury who found OJ Simpson not guilty. Trial consultants have been involved in numerous well known high-profile cases such as those of Kobe Bryant’s and Scott Paterson’s (McDermott, 2004). Many trial consultants have backgrounds in social sciences such as clinical psychology, sociology, or anthropology.…
Psychologists are often called upon to assist in court proceeding for both juveniles and adults. Forensic psychologists provide expert psychological evaluations at the request of court officials such as judges and attorneys. Forensic psychologists can be requested to perform counseling and psychotherapy for individuals accused of criminal acts as well as counseling for those who have completed their sentences and are on probation or parole (Ward, 2013). Another role of the forensic psychologist in court settings is the counseling of victims of crimes particularly those who have been subjected to violent crimes. Implementing thought experiments in Cognitive Science implicates imagining a situation and analyzing the outcome. These experiments assist in evaluating the study of moral psychology. There are four roles of a forensic psychologist that one can partake in within the legal system: a basic scientist, an applied scientist, a policy/forensic evaluators, and a consultant. Each of these roles consists of different responsibilities that crucial to all areas of the legal system such as law enforcement, corrections, and in court. Forensic Psychology The intersection between psychology and the justice system. One major compentent is having a understanding of legal concepts, especially concerning expert witness testimony. In conclusion, psychologists do the same exact thing as a doctor or a botanist would do; however, we do not hear biology, chemistry, or botany being questioned on whether or not it is a real science. I declare, that one of the main reasons people even consider psychology not being a science would be the amount of women opposed to men in the field, but even then, that is not recorded evidence. So through literal definition, the make of psychology, and the comparisons of psychology to other “sciences” that psychology is a…
Morality has been a topic of interest pursued by philosophers, theologians, and scientists alike for millennia. Wars have been waged and judgments have been sustained based on disagreements of moral standards. Entire societies have been established on certain moral principles, and complete fields of scientific research have been guided by strict ethical codes. Some examples of this are various theocracies such as Vatican City, the Pueblos Indians, or even the “divine rule” of the Japanese Emperor prior to 1945 (Waskey, 2007). Still further it is evident that the concept of morality is appreciated and valued as early as ancient recorded history.…
My area of interest is Forensic Psychology. Forensic Psychology is described as “the professional practice by psychologists within the areas of clinical psychology, counseling psychology, [and] school psychology…engaged as experts…in an activity primarily intend to provide professional psychological expertise to the judicial system” (Cherry, 2015). This field involves being knowledgeable to legal issues and legal codes and having the ability to translate them into psychological concepts. Persons in this field do not necessarily have to obtain a degree in forensic psychology, in fact many persons in this field have degrees in clinical, counseling or experimental psychology. In Addition to legal issues and regulations, Forensic Psychologist must…
The field of law and psychology are very diverse, especially with psychology constantly changing and expanding more so than law. Law and psychology have two distinct disciplines, however, they have a lot in common. The goal for psychology is to be able to understand behavior while the goal in terms of law is to regulate it. In the views of law and psychology, they both develop assumptions as to why people act in the ways that they do. Psychology is a field in which I am passionate about and my goal is to pursue a career in psychology in the future.…

Psychologists study human behaviour, so when psychology is applied to crime they study the reasonings of why the criminal executed the felony. As stated by The University of Brighton website, psychology helps criminal justice agencies discover why people make criminal decisions and how to prevent them. This information tells us that applied psychology is a very important aspect of uncovering why criminals behave certain ways. From these examples it is clear to see that applied psychology to crime helps with discovering the thoughts and behaviours of the…
