“Psychology is the most interesting of all fields. It’s the most interesting because it’s about us. It’s about the most important and intimate aspects of our lives. It’s about our memory of things. It’s about our dreams, love and hate. It’s about morality, our sense of right and wrong. It’s about when things go wrong as in depression or anxiety. It’s about happiness. It’s about everything that happens to us.” ~ Paul Bloom, Professor of Psychology – Yale University

How it works, what motivates it, the emotions, feelings and thoughts that lead to certain behavior. That has always been very exciting to me. When I was younger, probably 12 or 13 years old, I went through a life change. My mother and father were going through a biter divorce. Actually, my father had left my mother and ran off and married his secretary. This left my mother very devastated and she very quickly declined into a serious major depression. I had two older brothers at that time but they had both moved away leaving just me and my mother. For the next six to seven years just my mother and I lived together. During that time my mother had attempted to commit suicide on three separate occasions. I had intervened every time and luckily she was not successful. As I mentioned earlier, it was just her and I in the house. She would work during the day and I would stay with her before and after school. It was at this time that I developed a certain behavior that had a very significant impact on my life. I could not, or did not want to let my mother see what the situation was doing to me so I learned how to hide my emotions and, for lack of better terms, put on a happy face. I believe that this made me grow up very fast and it also shaped my behavior for the rest of my life to …show more content…
As a result I have been through numerous treatment programs from the VA as well as public and private facilities. Again, as I mentioned before, I have gained an incredible amount of practical knowledge in the field. Much of my treatment has involved the following therapies; Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to include Mindfulness, Group Therapy, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Prolonged Exposure (PE), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). Participating in this extensive lists of treatment has been extremely beneficial not only in learning about myself but I have also been exposed to techniques that has allowed me to gain a great understanding of how beneficial these and other types of treatment are in the process of conducting effective

Devastated. No word better encompassed my feelings. The first AP Environmental test of the semester had been returned and slowly but surely, the optimistic faces that littered the classroom had dimmed to faces of despair. My eyes frantically roamed the scantron that was loaded with red marks indicative of me selecting one wrong answer after another. It was simply inconceivable to me that the place where a glittering A was supposed to be instead held a vapid 73.…

I am looking forward to the future and starting my career in human rehabilitation services, but also feel sad to leave the Mercy Centre and the clients. They were extremely welcoming when I first entered the Mercy Centre and learned so much from them about working with this population and about creating a positive work environment. “Congratulations!!” read one post on a friend’s Facebook wall, the day after she landed an office job in her field. “So amazing!” read another. “Are you ready for your big-girl job?” asked a third well-wisher, accompanied by a GIF of Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope. “I can’t believe I finally have a real job” was the text she sent me a few days later, from the comfort of her desk, where she had been hired to do operations work for an organization she had once, a few years prior, interned for.…

Counselors have the responsibility of working with clients one on one, and also collaborating with other professionals that could benefit the best interest of their clients. Counselors need to acknowledge and respect the professionals that have their own specializations and understand that often times in human services, we never solely work on our own. In this situation, a Child Life Specialist would be an example of a professional with whom I could collaborate with in the future. Child Life Specialists (CLS) would be an excellent group of professionals to collaborate with as Mental Health Counselors. CLS have the difficult role to work with children in hospitals and support them through the process of fighting diseases and illness while trying to cope with many other factors that affect them within this process.…

My interests in counseling is fuel by hurts and pain of people I observed throughout my lifespan. From the time I could speak, I saw family members, being taunted, by traumatic event that occurred throughout their lifespan. For the future suppressing the pain, like substance abuse became an unconscious systematic coping method for stressors. Furthermore, as years progressed the hurt and pain presented itself through violence, verbal, and physical abuse.…
