Personal Narrative: A Career As A Mental Health Counselor

Counselors have the responsibility of working with clients one on one, and also collaborating with other professionals that could benefit the best interest of their clients. Counselors need to acknowledge and respect the professionals that have their own specializations and understand that often times in human services, we never solely work on our own. In this situation, a Child Life Specialist would be an example of a professional with whom I could collaborate with in the future. Child Life Specialists (CLS) would be an excellent group of professionals to collaborate with as Mental Health Counselors. CLS have the difficult role to work with children in hospitals and support them through the process of fighting diseases and illness while trying to cope with many other factors that affect them within this process. They work with children and families to support their journey by helping them …show more content…
The child in the hospital would need additional support with transition and coping with the process of dealing with constant medical issues. I can work with the CLS on ways to provide additional support and activities that would alleviate the stress and anxiety that may be paired with living under these conditions. Additionally, I could collaborate with a CLS by finding ways to support the siblings who may be witnessing their brother or sister dealing with health complications in the hospital. Also, they may have negative emotions by struggling with dealing with the stress and anxiety that their parents may be presenting. Lastly, working with parents would be a great way to collaborate with CLS because parents may need additional mental health support when experiencing such high levels of stress and anxiety due to having a sick child in the hospital. Often times these emotions may cause the parents to struggle with managing how they treat and care for themselves, and other children in the
