Personal Narrative: My First AP Psychology

Devastated. No word better encompassed my feelings. The first AP Environmental test of the semester had been returned and slowly but surely, the optimistic faces that littered the classroom had dimmed to faces of despair. My eyes frantically roamed the scantron that was loaded with red marks indicative of me selecting one wrong answer after another. It was simply inconceivable to me that the place where a glittering A was supposed to be instead held a vapid 73.
Leading up to what I considered the lowest point of my academic career, I was a ball of optimism. I ignored the warnings and the horror stories from the upperclassmen and registered for my first AP courses - AP Environmental Science and AP Psychology. I was under the false impression

As I mentioned in the previous assignment, I want to increase my baseline 500 steps each week so that by the end of the semester I am recording 10,000 steps which is in the active range. I will continue walking around the property at work and stepping in place whenever I possibly can. I will stick to walking to the mailbox which is two blocks from home as opposed to driving up to it on my way home. If I have days where I am tired I will just give myself another pep talk. I have a pretty good support system thus far so I will lean on them if pushing myself on my own does not cut it.…

It was the second week of school junior year, in my third-period physics class. The bell rang shrilly, signaling the commencement of my own living hell. The teacher - a small, wiry man with a bit too much bite - sat in the back of the room. Grade book, and red pen in hand, he waited impatiently with a cold glare. The clock's ticking was loud in my ears and mixed with my rapid heartbeat.…

When I get to my AP Language class I look around the classroom that has a homey feel to it. Curtains drape over the cold foggy windows in royal red, rimmed with gold shimmering colors. A lamp is turned on, creating a soft glow in the room while the warm smell of pumpkin pie is enough to make it hell for a sleep deprived person to stay awake. I walk to the back of the classroom, and sit exactly in the middle. Then I put my head down, and wait for class to start.…

My first F in a math class. I walked out of AP Statistics with puffy, red eyes contemplating how in the world those eight hours of hard work deserved a 58. Looking back on my teacher’s red ink, I realized that my work wasn’t wrong – it was my attention to detail. I disregarded the required format and did it my own way. I gradually learned to pay attention and work with other people, leading to a 5 on the national exam.…

One of the things that has significantly influenced my development was my Advanced Placement English Language and Composition class my junior year in high school. The class was taught by a phenomenal teacher, Mrs. Shaw, who made it virtually impossible for a student to fail the class because of her extreme dedication and amazing teaching. The class made me realize my potential as a writer. At one moment, it was a chore, something that I dreaded doing more than I dreaded washing dishes after Thanksgiving dinner. But after I completed the class, writing became something I actually looked forward to doing.…

In reflecting back starting the year I have to say I was extremely nervous. Many thoughts passed through my mind, “do I have what it takes for this career “and “am I able to influence change”. I knew I had to think back on some of the textbook information and how to apply it was another thought in my mind. Not only was I nervous I was petrified, I had been a stay at home mom for almost a year, I felt extremely shy and lacked adult social interaction. But I realized that I worked hard to get here and I was determined to finish.…

From sitting in class the first day to week 10, I have learned so much. My strongest gain from learning in this class is looking inbetween the lines and seeing if the sentance is a opinion, fact, or generalization. this step helps me determine what this articles is going to be, fact or opinion. I also have gotten faster at pointing out the main idea. One of my weakest abilities still is to connect with some topics, if they are too bland or boring its very hard for me to understand what the author is trying to say, by realizing this I can focus more on stories that are harder to connect with and get better at understanding them.…

One of the biggest rewards in her career as a psychologist is being able to do more for those patients who are struggling. She is able to get to the root of the problem, as she usually sees patients in multiple occasions, which gives her more time to accomplish goals. She also enjoys how diverse her typical work day can be, especially at the health centre. She mentions she does not have a typical day at work, since her clientele is of all ages and with multiple disabilities.
