Promoting safety and wellbeing (PSW) is an integral part of all teacher’s lives, thus requiring all students wishing to become teachers to learn and train in PSW.
The key fundaments of PSW is the roles a teacher plays. Teacher, even if they are only on placement need to provide an environment for all students that is welcoming, engaging and most of all, safe and respectful. Teachers are responsible for their ability to recognise when a child’s safety has been compromised, understand differences between types of ways it can be compromised (e.g. abuse, neglect, etc.) and be able to adapt accordingly, always reporting issues when needed.
To ensure that these conditions are met, standards are set even before teachers begin teaching. Getting police checks, and special training in regards to abuse and neglect is required and a beginning teacher must understand protective practices guidelines and follow them accordingly. Above all, teachers need to understand what it means for the child who is going through a form of abuse or neglect. This means understanding the way trauma affects children, giving them access to school and learning to give them access to a place that gives them positive life skills they need to ‘transform their trauma’ and understanding that school needs to be a protective factor in their lives.
Teachers need to work in teams and cultivate a support net that caters for all students and allows them to be safe and well. They need to know and follow all guidelines and understand how to act accordingly to any problems that arise with their students, parent or other teachers.
