The question here is "Was the Delian League successful?". My question is, was the Delian League successful in what? The Delian would be considered successful if you believe its mission was to save Greece from a Persian invasion. The Delian League could be considered victorious if you believe that it was designed to help Athens rise to power. If you were from the other Greek polis that was subjected by Athens using the Delian league, I doubt you would think the Delian League was successful. I will attempt to explain show the Delian League was and was not successful, and how we can use the knowledge about the Delian league in our world today.
The Delian League was founded in 478 BCE (Cartwright, M., 2016). When it was founded, …show more content…
I wonder if Athens ever had that said to them, and if so, did the lesson go right over their head? Athens was the most powerful polis in the league, with the greatest amount of naval power. That was not the only thing that made Athens more powerful than the other league member. According to the Rules of the League, each member was supposed to supply a certain number of ships to the League. For bigger polis like Athens, building a ship was easy. For smaller polis, it would have taken up far too many resources and space. To fix this problem, the smaller polis would hire Athens to build the ships for them(Butler, C., 2007). The problem with this is that those ships technically belonged to Athens, were manned by Athenian sailors, and were under Athenian control. This means that when a polis wanted out of the league, Athens kept the ships. It also meant that Athens could use these ships on the polis if they saw fit. Athens did see fit, many times, when a polis would try and leave the League, forcing them back in using the very ships they hired Athens to make (Butler, C.,2007). Athens, with its military power, would start to turn the Delian League into the Athenian Empire, forcing the polis to pay tribute, adopt Athenian ways, and stay in the league.
Taking all this information into account, I would say the Delian League was successful in what it set out to do, but not successful in the end. Yes, the league prevented Persia from invading …show more content…
Why should we care about the Delian League? How can we apply it to the modern day world? For one, the Delian league reminds me of the United Nations. Countries working together towards a common goal, be that defending against Persia or seeking to end world hunger. We can use the areas where to Delian league went wrong to prevent it going wrong with the UN. For example, Athens had too much power in the League, giving it the ability to control. We can prevent this from happening by not allowing any country, be that Russia or the USA, and more power than the smaller countries, such as France or Germany. By preventing any one nation from having more control than another, we can prevent what went wrong with the Delian league. That, I believe. is why we should
