The pH scale is really a scale that shows the amount of free hydrogen and hydroxide ions in water. The pH scale starts at 0 and goes to 14. On the scale 0 to 6 means that the water is acidic. Water on a scale of 7 means that it is neutral and water on a scale from 8-14 means the water is more alkaline or base like. Scientist around the United States take samples from water sources and test the water for its pH balance. Studies in 2002 show that no water found in streams and lakes were at the neutral and safe level of 7 and also showed that none of the water found had a higher scale than 7 making it alkaline. Most water in the United States had a level 5 pH scale but never the Eastern and North Eastern part of the United States drop down to a level 4 pH scale.
