Most people think nothing of throwing their trash on the street or crossing the street in the middle of traffic. It is done so much that it seems like a normal thing to do. Trippett, in “ A Red Light for Scofflaws” says that this is a growing problem. Trippett states “When it comes to tax codes, or laws against littering or speeding or noise pollution, more and more ordinary citizens are becoming scofflaws [people who casually break the law]” (Trippett). The only reason these laws being broken is a big deal is because of the amount breaking them. For example, if cities were so clean that there was not a single piece of trash on the street, or in any public place, littering might not be such a big deal. However, most cities are riddled with trash. It is not one of those things that they do not want done just because. If littering continues to grow, the result could be catastrophic. Another…

In No Impact Man, Colin Beavan discusses many important topics, one of which is about trash. This topic got my interest because we see it everywhere, Colin goes into detail and discusses a lot of facts about it. An interesting observation was made regarding the black color of trash bags, that the reason trash bags are black instead of transparent is because people do not or cannot deal with seeing what is inside of them. Another related topic that always gets my concerns is recycling our waste. There are a lot of people that don’t recycle and just don’t care. Those empty soda cans and food cans are natural resources, and we all have to recycle them. I usually get annoyed by all those empty water bottles in the normal trash, which is not designed for recycling. While the recycling one is just about one minute far from the trash!…

In “A Lack of Light on Litter”, Robert Davis mostly addresses the younger generation as his spectators. The content states there is a trend of laziness in American culture that the younger generation has grown into. Since the author believes high school and college students to fit the generations norm, it is assumed that the audience is these students. The issue at hand, is consistent littering among Americans. Davis explains how the young adults have a disregard for the effects of littering on the planet. Ultimately, the writer is addressing “litterers”, specifically teenagers or young adults. Moreover, Davis justifies how effortless it is for people to litter and how easy it is to get away with the crime. Captivatingly, he approaches his…

The landfill is supposed to be known for garbage however in today’s society that has changed because it is recycled items mixed with garbage. Over the course of the semester, we have discussed the negative consequences resulting from the way we, as a society, dispose of our garbage. Most of our trash generally ends up in landfills where harmful chemicals are washed off exposing surrounding areas to harmful pollutants which are then able to cause extensive damage to both the environment and the species which inhabit the area. This method of waste disposal, while convenient for both major businesses and individual civilians alike, has already proven detrimental to the planet and its many species, and has called for a change in the way we manage and dispose of these toxic materials. “Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things,” answers that call by providing a number of feasible solutions and changes we can make, not only how we discard our trash, but also how we can avoid the need to create any more.…

Nonetheless, unlike how issues concerning stormwater and rainwater are viewed as “significant,” issues relating to littering are not. There is an immoderate amount of waste that can be found in the laneways of Melbourne due to improper disposal of waste products. In countless laneways and streets, coffee cups, used tissues, half-eaten foods, gum wrappers, and several other rubbish. Although there are rubbish bins that were found located in quite a number of locations, and signs stating ‘No Dumping’(see figure 6), it is evident that there is quite a number of people who choose to avoid using these bins and decide to disobey this rule. However, the amount of rubbish seems to differ highly depending on how frequently the laneway was found. In…

Littering is what pollutes the earth. Fast food wrappers and cigarette butts are the most commonly littered items and 50% of the time the litterer doesn’t even realize he/she is doing it (EPA, 2016). By throwing the trash in a garbage and bottle and cans in the recycle bin instead of out the window, the amount of pollution that is affecting our water sources and wildlife will decrease. This will also save time and money spent on trying to clean the litter up. Also, not only will using a garbage help, but if you come across a piece of litter, pick it up and throw it away (Flagstaff, 2015). Litter is the main source of pollution and it can be…
