The process of how an individual may get their food can be vastly different among different cultures and societies. Only a few generations ago, food gathering consisted of hunting, harvesting, and farming. However, today, fast food restaurants and other rapid food services are on the rise. Technology continues to advance and allow mass production of all different kinds of foods. In today’s society, the use of Genetically Modified Organisms (also known as a GMO’s) are continuing to be a high topic of debate. Well known American Journalist, Michael Specter stated, “All the food we eat - every grain of rice and kernel of corn - has been genetically modified. None of it was here before mankind learned to cultivate crops. The question isn 't whether …show more content…
Growing that form of rice requires a lot of fertilizers and pesticides, which can be very expensive and defeats the purpose of decreasing world hunger. Golden rice also requires a large amount of water, which is very limited in third world countries. Well known Nutritionist, John Robbins stated,
“And one more thing — it turns out that golden rice doesn’t work, even in theory. Malnourished people are not able to absorb Vitamin A in the form of rice. And even if they could, they’d have to eat an awful lot of the stuff. An 11-year-old boy would have to eat 27 bowls of golden rice a day in order to satisfy his minimum requirement for the vitamin” (Robbins).
Therefore, it would also be very expensive to provide each person at least 27 bowls of rice in order to keep them nourished. Even being genetically modified to have added minerals and vitamins, the Golden rice will not end world hunger. Golden rice has been said to be a scam from big corporations that just want to make money. Neth Deno on behalf of small famers states, “The main purpose of genetically modifying crops has not been to help people; it 's been driven by profit” (Charles). A lot of biochemistry techniques are supposedly made in attempt to help the poor, but always have a connection to the promotion of biochemistry itself. GM foods have growing potential in nutritional value and help the productivity of crops, but at the same time are rising in many health and environmental concerns. The choice on genetically engineered foods should be placed into the hands of all well informed consumers, and not to those in power of the large corporation that do not have the general public’s interests as their primary goal. The best way to avoid GMO products is to choose Organic produce at local grocery stores, to always look for no-GMO verifications, and to avoid nonorganic processed foods. This may be challenging for some, but it is only a small price we have to pay in order to avoid the harmful long term effects of
