In this book there are instances of bullying, abuse, both physical and verbal, and poverty. Some teenagers in the world haven’t experienced these problems before, based on where they live and their background. However, these problems are real problems that take place day to day, and it is important that these issues are known. Spreading awareness on the topics of bullying, abuse, poverty and more will help teenagers to understand just how serious these issues are. For example bullying, which occurs with Eleanor throughout starting her new school, happens almost everywhere she goes. In her English class, her teacher says “’Eleanor,’ Mr. Stressman said. ‘What a powerful name. It’s a queen’s name, you know.’” to which a classmate responds, “’It’s the name of the fat Chipette,’ somebody behind Park whispered. Somebody else laughed.” Bullying is a serious issue in society today and this book can help people realize the impact behind it, and just how much it can hurt a person. Struggles with abuse and poverty in this book could do the exact same thing. As stated with examples in the previous paragraph, bullying, poverty and abuse are shown throughout this book. On top of being able to help bring awareness to these subjects, it could also be used as a tool of comfort by a reader. Young adults struggling with these issues at school or in their home could use this book as a resource to help them know they are not alone. It could help them speak out against what is taking place in their life if they were inspired by Eleanor and their journey.
