Bullying Something that every school has in common all over the world is the problem with bullying. In the documentary Bully made by Lee Hirsch in 2011, shows the life of kids, the family of these kids and the hell that each is put through. There are five youth lives that the documentary follows, but there are two kids that weren’t in the movie because they took their lives because of all the bullying. The three kids that are alive that are followed are Ja’meya, 14, Alex, 12, and Kelby, 16. Throughout the documentary, director Lee Hirsch uses logos, ethos and pathos to prove his point that bullying is evil. Lee Hirsch wants to show everyone the real danger of bullying in schools and how it is handled by school officials and parents. There …show more content…
This is the strongest piece of work that is about bullying and how it effect kids and the families. The way the movie was shot was perfect, it felt like I was there in the school, living room, and so many more places. There was a small part with the principle of Alex’s school asking the kids who bullied him about why they did. I wish they would have had more pieces like that in the movie because it made me even more interested in the problem. I have done research about bullying before and most of the time the kids that are getting bullied are also getting bullied at home by either other sibling, parents or even old kids that live close to them. They then take it out on another kid with all the anger they have built up from being …show more content…
Bullying is a huge problem in American schools. I know it happens around the world but I am not sure how bad it is. Too many young kids take their lives because of all the harassment they get at school. I am still shocked at the little 11 year old boy who took his life. I have never heard of such a young soul to end their life. He never got to experience what life is like but to him life was never going to get better. Back in Elementary School I was a bit of a bully but I saw how mean I was and changed my ways when I left for middle school. Seeing how the schools deals with bullying makes me sick. They just turn their heads the other way and hope for it to fix its self. Now with young kids able to access the internet so easy it will only become more a problem. When I grew up I never had such an easy access to the internet so it was never a problem in schools, but cyber bullying is the new form of bullying that is taking off. Teaching kids a young age that any form of bullying is bad would help the issue. It wouldn’t completely stop the problem but it defiantly slow the problem down. I hope every kid can see this documentary so they can see how bad bullying is to others. No kid or parent should go thought the hell of bullying or worse losing their child. Lee Hirsch should make a new “Bully” because there was no part of cyber bullying which is a huge part of bullying these days. All in all the documentary opened my eyes

Emily Bazelon discussed the national topic of bullying in her lecture, “Sticks and Stones” Defeating the Culture of Bullying”. Bazelon starts by defining bullying as a commonly misunderstood concept. She argues that not all conflicts between children are considered bullying. Bullying, Bazelon believes, should be a narrow term, which excludes drama or regular two-seeded conflict; consequently, she regards bullying as repetitive behavior that is a “campaign to make someone miserable”. In other words, bullying is not a fight; it is one-sided. In addition, states in the “Sticks and Stones” presentation that bullying cuts across all areas of income and gender; thus, bullying affects all types of adolescents. Overall, Bazelon wants to narrow the…

Some students are too embarrassed to tell someone about it, they feel it is better to “tough it out” or it is better than being a “snitch”. To manage being bullied, a few kids look for vengeance. Being bullied and rejected lead to sentiments of seclusiveness and weakness. Thusly, victims regularly feel an extraordinary longing and need to recapture power and swing to savagery as their cure. This viciousness, combined with a total absence of any sympathy, makes for a fatal formula. Bullying is a standout amongst the most types of abuse in schools. One out of four children is bullied and 70 percent of these episodes happen in…

According to authors Evans, C.B., Fraser, M.W., # Cotter, K.L. (2014) Bullying is a leading cause to rising numbers in suicidal deaths and school shootings around the country by bullied victims. “Bullying is a social phenomenon. About 30% of school children are involved in bullying as victims, bullies, or bully/victims. The victims of bullying suffer multiple negative consequences, including poor social and academic adjustment, depression, and anxiety.” Educating our own children about the risks and the harms of bullying is a must. Making sure they are aware and understand that being a witness to bullying and not stepping in is just as harmful as being the one that bullies. This can all be a great start to preventing this rising epidemic within our youth. Our youth is our future, if they are resorting to causing such horrible incidents due to something that could have been very well prevented, it becomes everyone’s responsibility to step in and make it known that this type of treatment to others will no longer be…

    Bullying: A Film Analysis

In Michael Phillips's review on Bully, he states "The blunt force of Hirsch's film has less to do with grotesque cruelty and tragic consequences and more to do with the sinister casual quality of so much bullying, too quickly and too often shrugged off by kids and adults as "part of growing up"' (Source E). Specifically, the assistant principal at the middle school mishandles every bullying occurrence by blaming the victims and releasing the bully with a warning. Even after numerous, worried parents come to speak with the assistant principal, she excuses the situation by claiming "kids will be kids", "buses are notoriously known for being bad places", "all schools have this problem", and "there's not much the school can do" (Source A). These justifications are poor, weak, and unsatisfying to parents and students. Although bullying does not have a proper solution, educators should use common knowledge and training to assess the situation and solve the problem appropriately. Unfortunately, most administrations are all talk and no action. Claudia Puig admits in her article that, "The film, which tells the story of five victims of bullying, should be required viewing for everyone ages 8 to 18. In fact, it wouldn't hurt to make the documentary mandatory for parents, teachers, and school officials as well" (Source F). Hopefully, the film will ignite a…

I think teaching these children at such a young age, the horrors of bullying, it will become engrained in their brain and they can help us to prevent it. Like the chapter says, I decided to think small. I did not have these extensive power points ready or huge packets of homework for the students to “help them learn” because none of that ever helps. I walked in with a worksheet with bullet points that I knew I needed to address, allowing space for their questions. I know these students would be supportive because no one wants to be the victim of bullying, it is a scary unknown factor that can happen to you at such a young age. And while, some do not get bullied, they spelled their school career worrying that it might happen. All I want for these students to know are the facts. The action I want them to take is to stick up for others, having each other’s backs, and not being afraid to tell an adult of what is going on so the victim can be helped. It is possible to expand these classes outside of the religious borders though. I could take Action 15 and write a letter to newspaper editors. Within this letter, I can encourage them to send anyone, adults and children included, to my quick lecture or encourage the towns to do the same as myself but with their…

There were many moments that I felt my heart literally breaking for the amount of cruelty. However, this video and the articles gave me insight into why the problem of bullying persists. Like anything, we are more willing to step in and make a difference when the problem is relatable to us. Watching Kelby’s story was devastating as my two best friends are gay. I have seen struggles that they go through, with their family, with their community, etc. While their problems are not destructive as Kelby’s, I was much more affected by her story because of my…

The documentary, Bully, follows five children, from elementary school to high school, and offers an intimate viewpoint on the topic of bullying, and how it affects young children and their families. My overall reaction to this documentary was an initial feeling of sadness. Sadness for the children who have been affected by bullying in the documentary, and sadness for all of those who have been affected by bullying in their lives. This feeling soon turned into a concoction of disappointment, anger, and overall confusion. Disappointment and anger in the fact that children in today’s society feel the need to verbally and physically attack others, and disappointment in the way that bullying is handled by teachers, parents, and administration. Confusion…
