The World Health Organization defines the occurrence of interprofessional education as “…when students from two or more professions learn about, from, and with each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes.” There is a scarcity of literature regarding the use of experiential-learning to teach students the roles and responsibilities of different professions, particularly when working to facilitate participation in children with mobility impairments.3,6 Literature exists that supports the use of experiential-learning over a pure didactic model of teaching to optimize the development of a student’s professional identity as well as enhance confidence …show more content…
It is also important to note that interprofessional collaboration has the potential to optimize outcomes with patients of various ages and with various diagnoses, but can be especially impactful when working with children due to the interrelated nature of development across multiple domains.5,12 For example, a lack of independent mobility in young children can hinder cognitive, speech and social-emotional development; however, it is possible that secondary impairments and participation restrictions can be minimized through the implementation of adaptive equipment used to augment physical capabilities.14 Students enrolled in this project will also be educated regarding the disparities for participation in the community environment that children with more severe motor deficits frequently experience.15 Six to nine percent of children under the age of 16 present with motor impairments that significantly restrict their abilities to participate in play and leisure activities.5 This lack of participation can hinder a child’s ability to develop social and physical competencies and have a long-term impact on a child’s quality of life.5,8,13,16 When multiple motor deficits are present, a team of professionals is often required to address the complexities associated with personal and environmental barriers.6,15,17 Therefore, this cross-sectional pilot study aims to assess perceptual changes among students who enroll in this
