Professional Development Plan The road to advanced practice nursing can be a difficult journey and selecting the right path is one of the hardest decisions to make. The purpose of this plan is to not only provide a portrait of my educational and professional accomplishments but to also delve into my personal and professional goals and discover why I have chosen this particular course.
Education and Professional Background My medical career started at the age of 18 years old in the United States Army where I was given a two-month crash course on life saving skills as a combat medic. The idea of saving lives was so frightening to me that I cried when it was time to practice starting an iv on one of my battle buddies. After that first successful start, I was hooked and wanted to continue to grow in the medical field. Fort Hood, Texas was my home station and while stationed there I worked as a combat medic and orthopedic technician. As my time of service was coming to an end I started to look at future job prospects. In the civilian world, a combat medic/ medical specialist is the equivalent of a nursing assistant and since I love a challenge and wanted to put my military training into use, I made the decision to become a Registered Nurse. Upon completion of service, I attended Central Texas College in Killeen, Texas for the two-year Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
