At the risk of sounding cliché, that is also why I became a nurse. I have always strived to be the best nurse I can possible be but I want to challenge myself to make a mark on nursing and healthcare. After reading the mission statement of this University, I feel confident I have chosen the proper environment I need to mold me into a nurse capable of promoting advancements in healthcare. Professionally, my goal is to obtain a Master’s of Science in Nursing (MSN) in Nursing Informatics. My vision is to design software that will enable nurses to streamline delivery of safe and effective care. Lastly, and certainly not least, as a professional I want to improve health care delivery in underdeveloped countries. As a single mother of two small children, I have become accustomed to doing everything for my family and I find it hard to focus on one task at a time. I have commissioned the help of my fellow students and asked them for tips on time management. In addition, I have also made a study schedule with built in breaks. This will hopefully allow me to complete my academic work and tend to other issues within an allotted timeframe.
Practicum
Practicum, or hands on experience is crucial to any nursing program and the MSN in Informatics is no exception. I am currently in the process of searching for a preceptor but I know I would like to precept in a large hospital or University. I want to make the most of my practicum setting by encountering as many real world problems and brainstorming potential solutions as possible before I graduate. I feel this will prepare me to become the type of change agent that can improve healthcare delivery. Researching articles for an assignment has made me aware nursing assessments, particularly in the area of pain assessment and re-evaluation, have room for improvement.
